Hi all - new to the forums. Diagnoses and Meds are in the signature.

I was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder (I asked the doc if it was 1 or 2, and he said it's 1, simply because I have had several hospital stays; not sure whether his philosophy on that is popular belief).

Anyway, I was on a lot of meds before, but now he has added the Depakote to the mix, and prozac for my PMS. Does it seem like I am on a lot of meds for my conditions? I am confused by the idea of doubling up anti-psychotics. Has anyone had any experiences with any of these meds conflicting with each other?

thanks for reading.

Hi Mrspotatohead, welcome to psychcentral. I went on Prozac for my PMDD also and for awhile there upped the dosage from ovulation to the end of my cycle. My current pdoc says to stay on a steady dose throughout. My pdoc also says both Wellbutrin and the anti-psychotic I'm on (Abilify) affect dopamine, but different kinds of dopamine. So I'm thinking that different APs affect different things in the brain. Does that help?

Take care.

Different antipsychotics affect different receptors in the brain. For instance, there are multiple different dopamine receptors in the brain. One med May effect one while another med may effect a different dopamine receptor. At least this is my understanding of APs and ADs.

I'm not sure what your situation entails. I'm on two anti-psychotics because they attack different parts of the problem---Geodon helps me sleep better, while Zyprexa manages my mania and anxiety better than the Geodon. It's not unheard-of to double up on APs. Believe me, you have a lot of company.....many of us are on 4-5+ meds for bipolar and related illnesses. Good luck.

Yep, many meds are not unusual, just check my signature. The only thing I might argue with your pdoc about is your dx of BP 1. I was hospitalized 4 or 5 times in my life and I have BP 2. So i don't think a hospitalization necessarily equals BP 1.

Welcome to PC ..

As other said .. Many people are on a handful of meds to help there bipolar.

Usually the difference between I or I is a manic episode ..even If only one happens its enough to warrant a Bipolar I diagnosis..

But the most important part it to treat the symptoms and learns ways to stay stable , healthy diet exercise, coping skills, meditation , mindfulness, Boundaries ,Therapy etc .. Bipolar needs to be treated from all sides.

Welcome to PC

You aren't Bipolar. You have Bipolar. I found out I have Bipolar during one year placement abroad. Its quite amazing how I've managed to keep going, that I'm still here, in spite of all the difficulties and stressful, painful and traumatic experiences and the really dark periods I've suffered with.
