My facebook is wall to wall Robin Williams anyway. I feel like I want to honour him some way, so watching his work and gaining inspiration from it is ok with me.

Last winter during my worst depression in a year I was talking over text message with a friend, it was really late at night and she was just talking about random stuff to distract me and we had a whole conversation about my love for Robin Williams and what our favourite movies of his were. August Rush was one of them. Also Awakenings.

I was devastated at the news. TheatreKid, I hope you continue in theatre--I spent most of my life working in tech theatre & I wouldn't give it up for anything. I didn't know I was bipolar then, but I was a high-functioning alcoholic. A producer I often worked with saved my life by confronting me with the truth, and being there to support me in recovery.

I hope you have a theatre friend like that, someone who's been there and knows the dangers, because even working backstage was stressful. So many people would try to get to the performers through the "workers" who were nobody but had the connections. I saw the stress of the paparazzi and fans and the need to stay progressing in your profession. It takes such a toll on so many. Fame is as much curse as blessing.

Add to that mental illness, and I'm grateful that Robin Williams was with us as long as he was. My heart breaks thinking of the torment he must have gone through to decide to take such a final step.

I hope he's at peace now. I am imagining Jack Benny waiting to get him aside and exchange perspectives on the essence of comedy.

He gave so much to his audience, and he also gave to folks young and sometimes older who were just getting their feet wet in theatre. I ran lights (basically follow spot) on his stage show several times, and both before and after the sets he'd spend time giving tips, listening to dreams, and lending support. The humanity of show business is less with his absence.

I'm so grateful to have all of the posts here, our own mini-tribute! Tears and laughter.

This was triggering for me, too. I wish I didn't know that kind of desperation, but I do and wouldn't want anyone else to suffer that way. I think we all know what that's like. I'm just so sorry he felt suicide was the only way out.....he could have had the best of care, the best of medications and therapy and all sorts of things, but in the end they availed him nothing. That's how deadly this disease is. What an awful reminder.

It doesn't trigger me for some reason. Death is just death. His choice. A great man, a man of power and wisdom, a man who made people laugh. A man who is mortal, just like us.

Hoorah to him.

I'm thinking Molière and Shakespeare will get in on the chat too. Lenny Bruce, certainly! Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain.

Yes, I believe they'll be visiting with some good philosophy/therapy mixed in.

This article from USA Today confirms that Robin Williams had a diagnosis of Bipolar: Suicide a risk even for beloved characters like Williams

If someone with the best access to mental health providers is unable to beat the illness- it just really speaks to how tough it is to find the right treatment. A part of me hopes that this will help open up a national dialogue on how serious mental illness is- and how we need to change the stigma related to mental illness.

My heart goes out to Robin, his fans, loved ones, and medical providers.
