I started taking Lithium Citrate again after many years off it. I was fine last time I took it but this time it is not helping my depression at all. I was hoping to get back to the way I used to be. But right now I am holding onto my life by a thread. I am barely making it to work. I am in a long deep dark depression and I can't seem to crawl out of it. My PDoc (who is also my therapist) just raised my Lithium hoping It will help, but I am getting worse!
I cry all day, I can't sleep, I am irritable, I feel like I have lost days and days of my life. I feel ugly and old. I can't see things the way they are. And my mind is loud. I talk to myself- a lot. I can't go outside unless I absolutely have to.

I don't know what to do. I have literally tried every psych med out there. It seems like maybe my brain has become desensitized to the meds and I have no hope.

Has anyone had a bad reaction to Lithium (aside from toxicity of course)???

From my understanding it could take a while to work. A while being month or more. I am sorry you are having such a hard time. I don't do well on meds myself. I am not suggesting you not take them though! I have been reading a lot on the nutrition of mental health and how certain foods can co tribute to depression and bi polar. Perhaps this could help you. I know there are professional articles on carb intake, sugars, and processed foods. GI levels of food also contribute. I am not an expert by no means, but something to possibly look at.

Thank you for responding. I have actually been wondering about diet lately. I eat horribly. Do you have any literature you can recommend?

Our bodies change. It could be that the new dose will improve things, or that you need another med to work with it. Even if other meds didn't work for you in the past, maybe some are worth revisiting in combination with the lithium. I look at it like a Rubic's Cube of moveable meds. And it's a new cube each time because of changing chemistry and hormones.

I'm only one week into lithium, which I took many years ago with a couple other meds, and so far I feel nothing. I've had to stop lamictal, though, which I used to well on, because it was worsening my depression.

I wish you well. Hang in there.
Thanks for this!

It took a while to kick in when I first started it when I used to be on it. It's supposed to be really good at stabilizing moods in the long term. Make sure you get regular thyroid functioning tests done.

There is a free lecture on nutrition and mental healt on relias learning. This could be good place to start. Please do not think I am telling you not to take your medication. Give it time. Use this a supplement. Thinking about you!

Oh no I know you aren't telling me to go off my meds. I never would even though its always so tempting to chuck it all out the window. But I am a nurse and a compliant patient as well. But I want to know more about nutrition and the brain. I know the brain and the gut are linked but we never really learn the body that way. We think of the brain as a totally disconnected organ.
Thanks for the tip I will check it out
