I was just wondering if any BP people have disoriented speech (and/or thinking) and/or are non-intelligible at times? (For instance, when mental energy gets extremely poor and/or racing thoughts or mania are chronic.) I've always have had disoriented speech and thinking (some moments worse than others) and I've recently attached it to a dissociative disorder (plus poor mental energy due to BP) but no professional doctor attempts to tell me what is really going on or is really 100% sold on the idea that my speech is disoriented (while everyone around me has commented on my poor speech, poor socialization since teenage yrs). Frustrated. (Some dissociative disorders consist of disoriented speech (plus depression, headaches).)

I've had where when I'm depressed I can tell I don't pronounce words properly - almost like I'm deaf. And I mumble and roll words together. But when I'm up I don't.

When I talk to people on the phone, they can tell something is wrong with me.

I can get disoriented at times when talking. Typically what happens with me is that my mind is running so fast that I can't keep up with the words coming out of my mouth. I tend to not ramble my words though, I stop talking and will get animated with my hands and grunt in frustration that I can't speak as fast as I want to. When I try to start back up, I get only so far before having to stop out of frustration again. Fortunately I'm usually talking to people who know me, so they can help fill in some of the blanks or ask leading yes or no questions. I also have a tendency to stutter when I'm depressed, confused, anxious, or highly stressed. I hate it because it is a dead give away for my therapist as to what I'm feeling.

My speech changes with my mood, but my therapist also has commented about how certain medications have caused changes in my speech patterns. Some have made me more edgy or more calm. At times, I've felt like I'm speaking in mud and she swears I'm speaking at a normal speed.

I am so glad you shared this.
I have the same thing, and I thought that I was the only one

My late mom had very slow, forced, barely intelligible speech when she was depressed. When she was not depressed, she spoke eloquently and was a college professor.

However I think that the speech was the way it was because she took old tricylcical AD's, in large doses. I do not know fore sure. if it was due to the underlying depression or AD's or a combination thereof.

it is a side effect of the pills we take

the longer u take them the more pronounced it is .............i know no one cares but i got my info from a medical report from UK they were testing something to see if it would improve the person skills
http://www.ukcia.org/research/Cannab...veDisorder.pdf

have a read it will explain the effects better then i could .........it is the reason why u have troubles sometimes it is a side effect of the meds and what they are designed to do
Thanks for this!

Yes. I get jumbled words. But my brain is jumbled at the time. So mania.
Thanks for this!

This has been really informative. The many psychiatrists I've seen have never touched on this yet family and friends and strangers have all made numerous remarks about my speech (or lack of). Yes, my racing thoughts over the yrs are exactly like Robin Williams' racing mind (and my mouth could never catch up to my thoughts) and days and weeks of extremely poor mental energy makes speaking harder than lifting weights.

Personally, medication has never greatly contributed to speech problems and I've been on all of them over 30 years. It's always been the disorder(s) that have caused the problems. APs, ADs have caused many other intolerable side effects for me (akithesia, headaches, light-headedness, hot flashes, horrible moods, etc.).

I believe Robin Williams was definitely a manic poster child (much greater mania than depression) - no average person has those horrible extended racing thoughts.

Talked too fast before diagnosed & on meds. Words ran together. Better now and less nervous. Still can be nervous at times.

I tend to slur speech when manic like someone trying to pretend they're not drunk and thinking they're getting away with it but everyone knows anyway.

I tend to stutter a lot. I have a hard time forming sentences...I often get told to "spit it out" or teased because of stuttering (which is fine since I often find it funny as well). I dissociate often though so someone may have to say my name several times or when they ask me a question I will be like "what? What were you just talking about? Can you repeat that?" It's so much thought redirecting and mental exhaustion that it's hard to communicate sometimes. That's why I usually end up isolating myself which unfortunately can make everything worse.

I have this problem. It can last months before it gets better for me. And it is not related to medication. Judging by other posts here, this may be due to BP with some people.
