Hey all,

So I'm just starting on a journey to get my drinking under control. I wrote a list of why I shouldn't binge drink. I'd like to share with you all!

Some of the items make more sense if you know:
•I identify as a gay woman
•I am a college student
•I am a vegetarian (pescetarian techinally because I do eat fish)

So, I think a lot of these are general and can help others, but a few are possibly specific to me or at least certain groups of people.

Have a look and feel free to share your reasons not to binge drink. I really think this can be helpful to others struggling to quit as well.

Reasons not to Binge Drink

Thanks,
Rachael

The worst part is breaking out in shiny brackets. They leave a red spot.

Do you mean if you get arrested because of something you do when drunk?

There's no tellng what you may do drunk. Chicken nuggets might sound good one night and off you go. It happens.

A little over a year ago, a club I was at was giving away free subway. All subs had meat and I just said "screw it" and ate a whole meatball sub. I was not happy with myself the next day.

My next "real" test as far as I can see, is in about 12 days when I'm going out with friends and there's a DD who is under 21. I hope I can control myself.

That is a good, solid list. Up until the last year or so I binge drank and did awful things. Then the next few days would be awful depressions. At one point I went to AA and that was the best thing ever. Those meetings were more helpful than any therapy I have had. Once I got my correct dx and went on meds the drinking and pill popping stopped so I assume it was more a self medication than addiction, but AA was still helpful.

I have done such awful things drunk- things my husband would be so hurt from and my kids horrified. I hardly ever drink to point of drunk now bc it seems 1 or 2 drinks now makes me instantly depressed and suicidal which takes all the fun out of drinking

Look at your list everyday. Do you have a therapist to help? Best of luck to you

As for my reasons: waking up face down in puke makes for a difficult carpet cleaning, I have climbed on roof of my 2 story house, I make out with people, I send embarasing texts, I can't walk, I try to open car doors while driving, etc etc

Great list so far!

I'd add these to mine...
  • After two or three, it's bound to be at least ten.
  • You always seem to misplace your phone and/or another important thing.
  • After a couple, your tongue gets disconnected from your brain.
  • Medication and booze don't mix. Seriously. That's why there's warnings on the bottle.
  • Your liver already hates you.

Sometimes I wonder if I should go to AA. The thing is that I'm not an alcoholic. I have a bottle of Vodka sitting in my room all the time and don't touch it until it's time to socialize/go out with friends...in which case I drink a heck of a lot of it. I do get urges to drink it sometimes though, but they're fleeting.

Sometimes my drinking is self-medicating too. I'll be depressed, so I want the high and I drink a ton to have that high for a night. Really it's hypomania I think.

Oooo gross. XD. I hope you didn't get hurt when you climbed on the roof of the house! And yeah, a lot of that sounds dangerous.

Thanks!

Those are great reasons. I totally agree with your first one. For me if I have 2 drinks, it's 5+. The high is there and I get all "awww, more won't hurt" and I'm just a goner after that. I can MAYBE have one, but I haven't tried that yet.

I agree with the medication. The effects are wiped away due to the alcohol.

Yeah. I get that. Cause it's possible even one can lead to many more. Personally, I don't know yet. Never tried to have just one. XD. Always have at least 2 and then I'm zipping for more hah

Had a strong urge to self-medicate while alone in my room. Very angry and depressed lately. So, instead I wrote out all my feelings and drew this chart. It's simple enough and I think it could help others to see it too.
