Hello fellas, fellaz, gents and lads,
How do you find books that are kinda 'crazy', personally I'm reading Marya Hornbacher's memoir 'Madness' about her bipolar life. There was one day I'd read 100 pages with complete loss track of time, I had quite low energies before that and if you were someone who know me personally, 100 pages in a row ? I mean the most that I have ever read is barely 100 pages together all books I've tried. Anyway, there are times where I find the book a little bit triggering and make me feel all pumped as "let's go for an adventure people". and there are times where I read the book calmly. How you find books of that sort for you ? Thanks

I can get lost in books if they take me to places / memories / associations I really don't want to go to. So yes I can understand how you can find some to be a little bit triggering. I guess it all comes down to how far our mind wanders during any given point in time when reading.

'Madness' is an exceptional book. No wonder you couldn't put it down! I devoured that book too. My reading habits depend greatly on my mood, as do my reactions to the books. When depressed I can be very deeply moved, often in a bad way. That is if I can read at all. When hypomanic I find it hard to concentrate but do get pumped up by what I read and am more pragmatic about the difficult realities. When I am neutral I am also calm and can read quite happily.

I found madness very triggering, but it was an excellent read and I got through it in about two days. Mind you, I read it right after being in the hospital.

Wow, in 2 days ?
I wonder how it was for you, because there are lots of content about hospitalization. My next book on the list is 'An Unquiet mind' of Redfield Jamison. Question; If you feel bit 'high', do you feel you're getting elevated and higher than you are when reading about the Manic episodes she went through ? And also, if you're down but able to read, how reading affects you ?

Books definitely affect my mood and mindset. I recently read a y.a. that sucked me in to the point I stayed on the couch for hours so I could let my mind reset. Also, Ender's Game had me sneaking around my house at 2am thinking I was a nine year old...
I can get sucked into "crazy" books easily but I read a lot anyway. I lump my two ten minute breaks at work together so I can have time to eat a snack and read and then read again during lunch. I love living other lives in books.

Marya's madness book ? :-)
Sometimes I would go like 20 pages backwards to reread, make sure there is no chance I forget what happened previously. I find myself recommending everyone to read this book, all friends, even my lecturers. Actually I was trying to convince my Professor for Psychopathology to take a look at Stephen Fry's documentary movie "Secret life of manic depressive". now I'll convince him to read this book, well... it's only fair cuz he told me last week to read 'An Unquiet Mind' ![]() I'm excited. I'm gonna read more. and more.

It depends on the content. I tried reading the first few pages of Hornbacher's Madness on Amazon but I found them so triggering I decided not to buy the book after all. I can't read about SI, although I haven't self-injured for 9 years it's still incredibly triggering for me.
But I do read a lot of "crazy" books. An Unquiet Mind is a very good one, for instance. |
