Good evening everyone. I'm writing because I need some advice on medications.

I've been on Lamictal for years, and it's worked great as a mood stabilizer, but it has also lead to anticonvulsant-induced hypogammaglobulinemia/CVID. For my health, I need to discontinue Lamictal, and plan to with my pdoc, but I'm so scared for my mind. I want to be rid of CVID and am hopeful d/c of Lamictal will help, but what should I take instead? Has anyone had luck with mood stabilizers that are *not* anticonvulsants?

I've tried so many medications so this seems like I'm facing another uphill battle, but I need to get it right. They either don't work or I am just too sensitive to side effects. I have an allergy to Lithium and Topamax, so those are a definite no-no. See in my signature for my current medications.

I have until Monday to really figure this out, as I need to go to my appointment prepared.

Any advice?

And....... go!

I don't know anything about CVID, so not sure what is safe for you. But generally antipsychotics can be good mood stabilizers.

I don't know what it is either. Can you explain it a bit?

Besides lithium, which you can't take, there are no "true" mood stabilizers.

Its all anti-convulsants and anti-psychotics.

Still waiting for big pharma to design actual bipolar meds ...

That's fine. I'm really just looking for help on which medication to choose that isn't an anticonvulsant.

Immune deficiency. Basically I don't have antibodies like I should, which leaves me very susceptible to illness.

Ok, immune deficiency can make antipsychotics tough because some have the rare potential of lowering white blood cells. Clozapine is the big one for this, but they would be very unlikely to give you clozapine anyway. I don't know which of the others is best for you. People here seem to like latuda, but I've never taken it. Abilify is another good one. I didn't like it, but a lot of people do. I took seroquel, olanzapine, and saphris, and they were all pretty much the same, although saphris is more weight neutral. I think different ones work better for different people. There are some others that I haven't tried, so there are a lot of options, depending on your particular symptoms. Good luck

Right now I'm just taking seroquel for bipolar. I'm not on the XR, though.

I'm also going to be switching from Prozac to Luvox for OCD because the Prozac was amplifying, or maybe even creating, rapid cycling mania. Such fun I have with meds.

Now I get to play ping pong between my pdoc and my immunologist. Doctors talk to me like I'm stupid and it's so frustrating. I've been researching hard, not wikipedia, and I'm quickly dismissed. I thought they were supposed to help us. Patience patience.

That's annoying! Keep advocating for yourself, hopefully they'll figure out that you know what you are talking about.

Update! No one wants to change it. Pdoc says maybe if physician agrees, but my physician (immunologist) says no. Grumble grumble.
