I have just cured myself of my Bipolar diagnosis !.
all I did was cut out all grains/gluten from my diet.

58 years of mental health problems faded to dust.

Food intolerances masquerading as mental illness !

IN MY CASE ITS TRUE !

I'm no doctor, nor am I you, but I fail to see how a gluten intolerance can manifest into symptoms associated with Bipolar. I know that gluten/sugar/carb free diets are all the rage now, but is it just a passing fad? Most nutritionists agree that unless you've been proven to have adverse reactions to certain foods, then there is absolutely no health benefits via eliminating them from your diet.

However, if you are feeling better, than more power to you.

Sorry but I know what I know.
For fifteen years I have researched my condition and found many article on wheat/gluten manifesting itself and masquerading as mental illness.
Its about time people opened there eyes to this research for their own good.
I probably still have S.a.D which is a variant on Bipolar but I have taken a huge step in the right direction. we shall see and I will keep all of you at Psych central updated.

Its amazing but understandable to me that their are so many sceptics on this forum.

It is a nightmare to have the symptoms of Bipolar but it is just a label for a set of symptoms.
having been depressed for the last 11 years has been a night mare cutting out wheat has completely changed my life.
we are all different and I am not suggesting you or any other Bipolar sufferer tries what I did.
we are all capable (at times) of making our own choices and decisions.

I would suggest you read the book "STOP DEPRESSION NOW "
There is hope but maybe not for all.

good health and good luck

Good grief Fingers. First it was blue light therapy that cured you, then it was some herbal drug, now it is wheat. What is next?

I really hope that is true for you. The only research that has been done and had some successful results in the "scientific" community (trials still being done) is for auto immune diseases. Such as Hashimotos (which I have), MS, Rheumatoid arthritis. etc. I want to go Gluten free and my Endocrinologist recommends it for me because of my auto immune disease but I love too many items with Gluten!

My only concern about the post is that you sound matter of fact and some people might take that as gospel and quit taking their meds. We have a tendency to become consumed to novel ideas! Me included! Hugs

I'm going to cut all wheat from my diet and let you know if it cures me. Thanks, fingers.

Good one wooly bugger.

That really made me laugh this morning !

Somehow joking aside I know what you mean.

I will definitely miss Hypomania and although the depression was not so good it definitely made life a challenge and exiting at times.

Thanks for making me laugh

I know what your saying . I feel that it has been a long road to recovery
my steps were these.

More daylight and sunshine
Use of DARK THERAPY PLease also see Hbomb0903 post Light and Darkness and its effect on those with bipolar.
Light therapy in winter
Vitamin D supplements
Vitamin B supplements
SAM-e (be very careful ) with this because of the risk of mania/hypomania.
complete change of diet . No sugar, No grains (wheat gluten) no dairy

Still feeling great and sleeping like a babe !

Isnt it strange ????

SAM-e before wheat elimination causing wild hypomania
SAM-e after wheat elimination no hypomania

I am now taking 200mg SA M-e daily.

Good for the old dopamine apparently

good luck and good health to you

I see over and over people with poor diet misdiagnosed with mental disorders - change in the diet - change in the mind! This, of course is not true for all.

This is why it is so important to have a healthy lifestyle. I can guarantee there are people on this forum whos life would improve tenfold with a lifestyle change - some would even say cured!

But there are many who do eat well and exercise and still suffer greatly. Unfortunately its not so simple for them.

My goodness, fingers, you sound like my T. She seems to think that because she cut out gluten and feels better that it will work for me.

Of course it is a good idea to have a healthy diet, but that doesn't mean that everyone that has a certain set of symptoms necessarily has a food allergy or a nutritional defiency. I have had blood tests done, and the only thing that was uncovered was a Vitamin D deficiency, which many, many people have.

Also, I have to wonder, if foods containing gluten are that damaging, what of populations whose diets include a lot of pasta and noodles? Why aren't these symptoms epidemic among those populations?

Forgive me for being skeptical, but I am wary of anything that I read on the internet. I put my trust in my doctors, who have the training and expertise to treat me, and my mood stabilizers are what help me, rather than one person online who claims to have cured himself.
