Hey all. I'm relatively new here. I recently quit my job at 23 to go back to school I was ready for a change. I mean I liked my job, but something told me to change it up and do something different. Anyway, I'm having some problems adjusting because it's community college and I'm having a hard time relating to people and making friends with peers. I also and tired during the day but am wide awake at night that sucks.

So does anyone have any other issue making friends at school or work? Also I hope the stress doesn't get to me.

Oh and my girlfriend. She is one of my only friends. She is very good to me and we are happy even thought we argue sometimes. Both of us moved back in with our parents to go back to school. Does bipolar effect anyone's romantic relationships? I'm worried I'm going to mess it up.

Man starting as a freshman at 23 sucks. I am so far behind. I hope quitting my job wasn't a bad idea. If I drop out again I'm screwed

I do go to the gym tho. I'm a little gym rat. It's like my only hobby. Maybe I need more hobbies? Idk I just don't want to have another episode. I've done good so far and I'm not in the hospital. Boy did the hospital suck. That was like a year ago. Since then I've lost myapartment and quit my job. Well the apartment because I have no money cuz I quit my job to go to school. Man, life has changed so much in a year

If you click on the title of your thread you should see the responses... So far it's just what you added and my post here.

I think it's fantastic that you are going back to school-- good for you. You may feel old to be doing it, but trust me-- you are young :-)

Are you taking a full-time course load? Have you taken steps to establish a routine with classes, studying, getting enough regular sleep, eating healthy food regularly, and taking care of personal business? Is your sleep issue because of poor sleep hygiene, not adjusting to different schedule, effects of medication? Just some questions to clarify what might be happening. Does your school have a counseling center? If you don't have your own counsel might be worth talking to someone. The school's disability resources office could be helpful as well, they may have some ideas or advice. Your school likely has different student organizations that you might want to check out and maybe get involved in 1 or 2. provides a way to meet people.

Yeah I am taking 13 credit hours. Not quite sure what you mean by prepare. I kinda jumped right in! Not sure what you mean by the sleep stuff, I fall asleep when I'm tired. No medication, trying to do without it.

I actually looked into organizations but because it's a community college, options are very limited. They don't even have mental health services

Hi there, welcome to PC!

School is stresssful, so I definitely understand where you are coming from. I don't have any great advice when it comes to making friends, but I just wanted to add in my two cents about school. When I went back, I started off with a couple of classes before adding more so I could get adjusted to what it's like being back in that environment. And as Gemma advised, seek out counseling as needed. I didn't when I was younger and my whole college experience could have been different if I would have gone the first time. As long as you maintain a good sleep schedule, eat right and exercise, you should be ok. And see if there are any clubs available. I know community colleges may not have as many, but there are a few from what I remember when I went.

Good luck and I hope it all works out!!

Thanks for the reply. It seems weird that not many people reply. Haha. Maybe I'm just not popular. Anywho, yeah I should join some clubs. Maybe a weightlifting club. My gym is closing soon so I gotta find a new one.
Man living with your parents sucks they are always qurstinging my mental state. Kinda sucks. Like yeah I get it sometimes I have a lot of energy and other times I don't. But they keep saying it's unhealthy but I kinda feel like meds are unhealthy too. Well my dad started taking meds after years of being angry at life and he seems much happier. Idk.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have no friends and I am much more advanced than the rest of these 18 year olds. I feel alone. Almost like I'm the only person who gets it.

Also, being bipolar def affects me in the worst ways just as much as how it affects me in the best ways.

I don't condone this because I really messed up but I decided to not take my mess to get a project, a paper, and a speech done and I got them done and in good shape but I messed up every other part of my life.

Isn't it really early in the school year? I'm always shy and tend to observe at first when I meet a large group of people. Try and gravitate towards positive people that make you feel good. It takes time but smile and say hi. I hate to say it but being a smoker in college helped me meet all my friends. I don't recommend it but maybe find a club that interests you. And be kind to yourself.
What's with the gun?

Yeah it is early in the semester. I will have to look for clubs. Right now, I'm in kinda a club at my gym. It's cool 5 days a week but it's different then school. Like I said, not sure how many clubs community college has, but I'll have to look into it.

I also suck at being kind to myself. I am hard on myself. Very self critical

I got it for self defense/home defense. With all the mass shootings and random killings now days, I will not be a helpless target. When someone is pointing a gun at you, you don't have time to just call the police.

I can relate man. I have a B.S. in Psychology and Minor in Philosophy. I resigned from my job last September due to a suicide attempt from the stress and zero work life balance of the job I had. I'm taking course this semester at community college here in Dallas and then transferring to UNT to get my second Bachelor's in Philosophy and go through to Masters and PhD. It is a culture shock but just take it one day at a time. It could be city that changes it but the one I'm going to has a pretty high level of "adult" students. Try and get involved in an organization if you can, it'll really help. Start study groups, etc. Each little bit helps. It's not the quantity of friends but quality . Good luck and do you know what area you want to study ?

I didn't make friends really until I started getting into my major and started seeing the same people in classes. I went back to college when I was 20 so I was slightly older than everyone. I also commuted and was in a serious relationship which made me stand out. I even got engaged when I was in college and had my son the second during my senior year. All that made me feel different from everyone else and I didn't make friends very well. But honestly I always convince myself that I'm too different from anyone to make friends.

Joining organizations is a good idea. Then you will meet like minded people.

I totally feel you on being different then everyone else. That's how I feel. Almost like I cannot connect with people. Idk. It's not that I have bad people skills, it's just I feel that when we talk we have nothing to talk about. Maybe when I transition to the 4 year college some organizations will be available to make friends.

Right now, it's computer science. The school close to me has garenteed admissions and a 5 year master program I hope to get into.

I am also in a committed relationship with a older female. (She is 27 I am 23). It does seem to put me at a different place then the fresh out of high school students.

I'm sorry to hear about your job, I hope it all gets better and you find one that works for you.
