Hello everyone,
I have a question about an issue I've been struggling with. This may or may not be related directly to bipolar. For the record, bipolar II is what I've been officially diagnosed with and is my main concern, but other issues have arisen as well (general coping, obsessions, compulsions, phobias, etc.). If this question would be better suited for another forum, please let me know. Okay, here goes: For about as long as I can remember, I've had trouble with verbal outbursts. These seem to be brought about by a wave of thoughts, feelings, and/or memories that suddenly wash over me. For instance, something will cause me to think about something unpleasant that happened either a while ago or recently and this will lead me to thinking about an litany of unpleasant things, and I will blurt out, "No! Stop!" Or I'll remember something that made me mad, and I will blurt out a swear word (I don't know what the policy on swearing is around here, so I'll leave it up to your imagination). Or a whole swirl of emotions/memories will hit me, and I'll blurt something random like, "I love you!" I don't believe this is full-blown Tourette's or anything like that because I can generally control it around other people (although things do sometimes escape under my breath). I would like help because it does cause me distress and makes me feel like I'm losing control. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I do this too. Like you, I don't feel I have full on Tourettes, but it feels like it when these words blurt out like that.
For me, it happens when I'm overwhelmed. I don't know if it's related to bipolar, or just some odd trait I have. I say "I love you" a lot when it happens. Sending you hugs. I know how awkward this can be. (((HUGS))) |

I have a big problem with angry behavior and verbal outbursts. IMO, this is part of being BP. I lose myself in the moment and feel regret almost immediately. I take a mood stabilizer (Depakote) to help me cope and try to be mindful of the moment (but the latter is difficult for me). I also try to meditate and live a relatively healthy lifestyle. It could also be a side effect of some level of anxiety.

I do that when I'm alone. I'm mortified that someone might hear me. I sometimes shush myself in reaction to painful memories in the presence of others. That's not easy to play off.

I must admit to certain exclamations - they are sort of rather immature tension relief. As they annoy and upset anyone who hears them, I have taken to using Klingon words - Klingons being pretty easy going on this sort of thing.

Thanks for your responses, everyone! It makes me feel better than I'm not the only one exhibiting this type of behavior. I feel much more comfortable broaching this issue when I find a therapist in my area.

I also do this, but I've always called it word vomit. When I'm having racing or guilty thoughts stuff week just pop out. I used to frequently curse or say "let's go to the zoo". Now I've halfway trained myself to say I love you to the people near me.
I brought it up when I was first discussing the possibility of a bipolar dx and my Dr didn't say it was related specifically. |

I do this a lot. I often start spewing words in some made up language that doesn't mean anything but conveys the emotions I'm feeling intensely. Often I curse at myself. My doc says it isn't specifically a symptom of anything, but more of a manifestation of anxiety and extreme feelings, the anxiety and extreme feelings being the symptoms of my ailments.

When I'm very manic, I sometimes do this incessantly. My thoughts spill out of my mouth. It is overwhelming and I always recognize it to be absurd and embarrassing. I also sometimes do it if I am extremely anxious. I don't do it in my every day life though.

As someone who has had Tourette's since she was a little girl, I can assure you it isn't something you wonder whether you have or not. Also, one can only have "full-blown" Tourette's. There is no semi-Tourette's. No convenient Tourette's that is polite enough not to show up at interviews. A person can control their tics in the same way someone with OCD can control whether they turn the doorknob thrice to the left before entering a room. There are times when they will, for the most part, disappear, and others when they are so bad I worry whether I'll ever stop. Because you have to continue until the tic is complete-you cannot stop until it feels "right". In order to be diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome, you must have both a motor and a verbal tic which have been present for more than a year. Most have symptoms surface when they are quite young. You appear to simply be under a lot of stress. - |

i like the way u described that... very concise... ![]() by that definition, i cant say ive ever experienced anything like this... i do have several ocd qualities though, particularly when it comes to repetitive tasks. i cant go on without evenly brushing deodorant in multiples of 10 on both pits. i mean, i can force myself to accept one with 11 strokes and the other with 8, but it will bother me, so on a regular basis, i do this almost naturally, like instinct.... the same with many other things.... i knew someone that definitely had tourette's.... apparently couldnt notice their verbal ticks... guess cause it was so normal to them that it tunes out... |

Tourette's and OCD are actually quite similar if you think about it and the two often coincide. That is, Those with Tourette's are also very likely to suffer from OCD. I can sort of relate to your deodorant-compulsions. When I put my glasses on, I glide them open thrice across my cheeks before pushing them on. I repeat how ever many times it takes for them to feel right. I simply cannot focus if they aren't. I believe that is more to do with Tourette's, however. |
