I got approved for SSDI really quickly. It only took 3 months. BUT according to whatever psych documentation they reviewed, they decided I'm not capable of managing my money and it has to be handled by either my mom or an attorney. I'm not sure if there are any fees if I go through an attorney. My mom controls my whole life right now and I don't think I can mentally handle having to ask her to dole out money for my bills and gas. Why is it always two steps forward, one step back?

I've recently been approved too. Three attempts. On my last attempt seven weeks to get approved. I would not want my mom in charge of my money either. Is there another person you trust? I'm absolutely positive an attorney will charge. If you decide to go that route be sure to shop around and get references.

Ill find out if I can maybe get a friend to do it instead of my mom. The case manager didn't even call me, she called my mom! I'm not going to get better if they don't involve me in the decisions that are being made.

You can try calling the disabilities rights advocacy for your state and asking for their help in finding a neutral party to handle your money.

I agree with sidestepper. Your disability rights organization can find a neutral party (called a payee) to handle your money. You just need to be proactive with this and you'll be able to find a more satisfactory payee than your mother.

I have a rep payee but it's more of a formality. That is he pretty much hands over my entire check (direct deposit) en toto. He has to fill out paperwork saying where my money has gone every year I think. I am responsible though and pay my bills, nothing wrong going on here. I was told that if there is anything drug relying your files (drug use, drug abuse) then they'll use that as a reason for a rep payee. I had multiple suicide attempts using medications.

I went through this as part of my bankruptcy. The accounting service managed my money and there was no charge. They did hand over the entire cheque but I had to account to them for every single penny I spent. I had to do this for a year.

Truth be told I wish I still had to do this. I otherwise do not manage my money very well and once again have debt.

There are agencies and debt specialist that I'm sure could help with this for no charge as well.

Just wanted you to know the same thing happened to me and now my mother is in charge of my money. However she doesn't withhold it from me, which is good, but I do fear that someday she will. I believe there is a way to appeal this decision however I have not tried yet.
