Hi guys,

My new Pdoc does not prescribe benzos or hypnotics.

I'm taking trazodone 100-150 mg. Xanax .75 mg to sleep.
The traz does nothing without the xanax and viceversa.

Is there any other prescription drug that I can ask for sleep?.

Thank you for your replies.

Ambien doesn't count as a hypnotic does it? Ambien XR has worked well for me in the past.

PS: Trazodone never helped me either.

EDIT: Derpaderp, apparently Ambien IS a hypnotic. My bad.

Xanax is a benzo.
I've used Vistaril (hydroxyzine) in the past since my pdoc was the same way. I believe it's technically a antihistamine. Maybe that can work. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

Thank you for your replies.

Ambien is a hypnotic. I tried it, but makes me go in eating binges.
I agree the tazodone is like being hit with a baseball bat, but does not put me to sleep.

Yep, xanax is a benzo. Can't get it anymore.
I'm trying to get Klonopin (another benzo) from this doc, but I don't know
how the transition from the xanax is going to be.
If push comes to shove, I'll ask for the Vistaril. Thanks for the tip.

I believe that the main difference is that Klonopin lasts longer and has less of a "peak" than Xanax does.

I use the herbal things for sleep & calming tea before bed. I have struggled sleeping since I went through a trauma 11 years ago. I almost have to be totally exhausted before I can go to bed & sleep & that may come any time during the day, not just at night.

There are some good OTC things that have helped me at the pharmacy but one has to try them to see if they work or not because each person is different in how they react individually.

I'm taking notes. Vistaril, Remron, Seroquel, Doxepin, Selenor.
I wish I coud sleep with the OTC. Or herbals. Maybe when
I come off the depression and start exercising.
Also, I have very poor sleep hygiene.

I'm not taking the full list to the doctor. For they don't like
the pacient knowing more than them.

My sleep hygiene has been perfected over the years. I keep it going even on the weekends.

Take your sleep med at the same time every night, no exceptions. Go to bed, meaning actually be in your bed and not in the living room watching tv or something like that. It sounds obvious but so many people don't actually do it. A sleep med may not work if you're still stimulating yourself with electronics. Which leads to not using cell phones, tablets, etc. while in your bed. Turn off the lights in the bedroom as well. I want to say turn off the tv also, but myself personally can't do that. I need the background noise. So I set the sleep timer and face away from the tv with a program on that I don't actually need to be looking at, like the news or a rerun of a show I already know (and can probably watch in my head lol). If you can fall asleep without tv, first of all you're lucky (and I'm jealous) and then you can go ahead and add that to your routine once you're in your bedroom. You should fall asleep within the hour if you have the right med at the right dosage. At least that works for me. Good luck!

.

I have a situation, besides having to do as you with the TV.
After I take the trazodone I need to eat something.
Then, I need to wait an hour to take the xanax.
One goes with food, the other doesn't.

Everything I know of has been mentioned. Trazadone works for me, but I also take zyprexa. Zyprexa will knock you out. But the side effects suck...

It worked for me in the past. I'm actually going to talk to my pdoc about it again because I'm not liking what Seroquel is doing to me this time around.

Seroquel 150 mg, increasing to 200 mg is my main medicine and helps with sleep most nights, except if something is worrying me. It definitely causes sleepiness within 90-120 minutes, so be forewarned My Pdoc started it at 25mg and very gradually increased if.

I hope you can get some sleep!

Goodness! What we have to do with timing with all these drugs! I was thinking the same thing earlier today with what I have and taking a certain supplement. This is annoying, so I feel your pain..

Neurontin and Clozaril help me sleep.

When my son was young he took clonidine and later Remeron.

Everything I took other than herbal things left me feeling hung over the next day.....seroquel worked but only after I went through the trauma when the nightmares were so horrible. I needed something that totally knocked me out & seroquel fit that. I also weighed only 93 pounds at the time & was taking 600mg at night. I was non-functional anyway at that point in time so the non-functional that seroquel added was not even realized because of the mess my life was in at the time anyway.

After I started to live alone & had 7 dogs at first to take care of (down to 3 now), I needed to be on at all times of the day, couldn't afford to take anything that knocked me out & I still feel that way though when I get totally exhausted, nothing wakes me up when I finally crash without the help of any meds.....the rest of the time, I'm a mess waiting for exhaustion to hit.

No wonder why I'm dealing with high blood pressure. When I sleep normal, the blood pressure is normal...but when I don't sleep, it's high.

Gabapentin does help me at night for sleep. It makes me feel all cozy and relaxed. I fall asleep every night before the seroquel even kicks in.

I take Geodon for bipolar 1 mania and psychotic episodes - I don't take it for sleep, but I sleep well on it and awake refreshed. Just wanted to throw that out there if it helps. My pdoc would never prescribe an antipsychotic for just sleep, however.

Ive just been rx'd propranolol off label for anxiety and it helps me sleep. For the first time in years Im sleeping more than 2 hours at a time. Helps me shut my hamster wheel brain off. Its a beta blocker so not addictive and no hangover feeling. I take a very low dose as Im sensitive to meds. Good luck. I have to add that I still take clonazepam which is a benzo but its not for sleep.
Thanks for this!
