I would say many are having anxiety issues due to caring too much.
Mentally ill is just that. Mental illness. In every way shape or form. Not just bipolar.
Thanks for this!

I smoked for over 35 years. Tried several times to quit but never made it. Quit 6 years ago using the patch (trick is to use all stages, not say 'I can smoke just one' after a couple of weeks). Yes, when I catch a sniff on the breeze, I still get cravings. I hope to never smoke again.

Everytime I've been IP or PHP at least half the group leaves for smoke breaks. Just another coping mechanism for MI in my opinion..

I've only been to one IP that let us loonies out for smoke breaks. People would watch that clock and line up at the door lol. And yea, being in there, fresh air and lots of smokes were needed! And smokes became the thing to trade in there. A cig for some braids? Hell yeah lol

That doesn't mean 60%/50% of cigarettes is smoked by the mentally "ill".

But it could be (never looked into it from that perspective).

I've tried to quit several times but rarely get past the 1 month mark. I become very anxious and suicidal when attempting to quit. As sad as it is to say, nicotine must have some sort of therapeutic quality for me. I've read the statistic regarding the correlation of smoking and mental illness. It doesn't surprise me at all. I wonder if there is any scientific research which explains why. I'm an information ***** so I should look that up!

I've tried quitting with vapor cigs before and they helped a bit but I wasn't able to get a big enough drag from them, and they always left me "wanting". My sons friend recently got one of the vape boxes which release a TON of vapor. He let me try it and it was very satisfying. I plan to buy one soon and it just might be exactly what I need.

I look forward to your later post and story.
Nicotine works like a neuromodulator, much like a teacher telling her pupils to focus on their work and keep quiet. It does this (probably) by influencing the hypothalamus, the control centre of all subconscious and automatic (and balancing) behaviour, and directly the muscles.

It could still be and it matters not. Let's settle for a lot of people with a mental "illness" smoke. So they may hopefully in peace (I am talking those with psychotic disorders only, for who the benefits outweigh the risks often), if they do already (otherwise other options may be preferable). Anything to discourage it is plain cruel.
