I applied for disability almost a month ago, and I haven't heard anything and neither has my T. How long does it usually take to hear something -- anything?

I can't check my status online because after I finished my application my computer froze while loading the screen with the confirmation number or whatever, so I don't have that, and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail which could still be another 2 or 3 weeks.

According to what I've read, the average can be six months to a year. I received mine in three months, but I think that's an exception.

I think mine took between 6-9 months. I think I called to check on status once but didn't get much information. The waiting is a killer. Your whole life hangs in the balance. I wish you the best through this. (((Hugs)))

I had a phone call with my local office soon after filing (maybe a week or two?) that just reviewed some things, verified SSDI vs. SSI and explained the process. Soon after I think I had more to fill in online (I think?) and also a big form by hand. My therapy got the a form about the same time. They came about 3-4 weeks after the initial application and had to be returned quickly. I was approved at 11 weeks but that's extremely rare.

Nope. Can't call and get the number. You can call and request that the number be mailed to you, which I did (I actually called hoping to get the number)...but they said it could take up to 30 days for the number to be mailed.

I guess I'm going to have to tell my mom sooner rather than later that I applied so that she and my dad will continue helping me with rent because I can't work full time which means I can't pay my rent...

I ended up living back with my mom for a couple few years while mine went thru. People were all, "oh how nice, youre taking care of your old mom!" I was like no, shes taking care of me!

good luck!

I can't move back in with my parents. That is actually not an option...my mom has even said it herself that me living with them is a terrible idea.

I'm actually pretty sure my mom wouldn't even LET me come back home. And tbh, there is NOTHING in this world that would make me willing to go back home.

Don't mean to be a downer, but it took me 2 and 1/2 yrs. I have a damaged back and that's what I got it for even tho we were trying under bp. I had been in the hospital like 5 times and even the day I met with the judge you could tell I was unstable, I was crying hysterically. But I got it for my back.

Hope yours doesn't take long....

Thanks. Although my question wasn't how long does it take to get it...it really is simply, how long until I hear something -- anything.

It can take months to hear something... two or three... and then you may just be rejected and need to appeal. If you have to appeal, be sure to get an attorney for it.

When I applied for disability I was rejected the first time, got an attorney and then was approved the second time ... total time about ten months.

Oh I'm sorry, well I heard something in either 60 or 90 days. I need to read ops posts better. I've done this a couple times now. Sorry....

You can always call your local office. The ladies at mine were always very kind and happy to answer my questions.

Thanks guys. I know the process can be lengthy, but I'd at least like to know something about what's going on, especially since I need to talk to my mom and tell her I've applied and will still need financial support from her and my dad because I can't work full time, and part time work sure as hell won't pay my rent! (Full time work at jobs I can get is barely livable in terms of salary)...it really sucks living in a super expensive place. My rent is almost $1000/month! And not even for a true 1br apt!

Wow. I was paying only a little more than that for a 4 BR 3 BA house!

SS doesn't really contact people during the process, at least they never did with me until they wanted me to see one of their medical doctors. (I never did have to see one of their psychiatrists.) Two months later I was approved. I think what helped was having more than just bipolar---I have pretty bad arthritis, am seriously overweight, and I'm old. All told, the process from filing the papers to being approved was only six months.

I think it should be added that every state does this a little differently while staying in federal guidelines. That makes it complicated too.

Where I live, in Washington state they do contact you usually to deny you. When they did that to me I just immediately got an attorney. I knew I would eventually be approved. I got $387 a month and like $200 in food stamps. My sisters helped me or I wouldn't have been able to survive.

New York is just so expensive, a one bedroom here is like $550 a month for a decent one. I'm in eastern Washington.

I hope you get all this figured out...

It took mine around 5 months for me to hear back on my disability decision.

The website was pretty useless for updates. I all ready got my back pay check before the website had any new information.
