So I'm a chem major, been one for 9 years, a lot of the reason for that was substance abuse, but I turned that around about 4 years ago. Now I have an episode every semester, and they get to the point where I cant do my work. I only have 2 semesters left with 3 classes, but I'm pretty sure I can get a degree in natural sciences right now or with another class maybe, and just be done.
I think I'll feel like a failure or like I'm taking a cop out and not be performing to my full potential. So I don't know what to do.

Thoughts?

Trust your gut. Don't go for the "cop out".
You can do this. Look how far youve come

9 years is just such a long time though, and that having a year left is only if everything goes as planned, which it almost never does. It just keeps getting pushed back.

I understand. The only thing you can do now is weigh your options. Both answers are right, just as both answers are wrong. What do YOU really want from this? If it's a degree, just take the easy route. And between the two degrees what is the difference in jobs and quality of life after? If you take the hard route, do you get more reward?
Often times your degree doesn't matter past having a/any degree. There are of course exceptions.
At the end of the day, what will leave you feeling the best? Do you need to just get through it? (I've been there) can you do that without hating or being dissapointed in yourself?

What do you want to do with your degree? That's what I would ask myself. If you don't need the chemistry degree and you're just as happy getting another degree, do it.

What will make you happy? What will give you employable skills? Combine the answers to these two questions and you're sure to have something to work with.

So my husband spent a really long time in school pursuing this and that degree, settling on secondary ed. which required a couple more years on top of the several he already completed. I looked at the courses he had completed and was like, 'dude, you are like 3 classes away from a psych degree' and encouraged him to just get the psych degree and be done.

In retrospect, I probably should have kept my mouth shut because a psych degree is like a degree in nothing. You can get entry level jobs at like DHS and other places that don't pay well.

So, I guess what I am saying is make sure you take into consideration your ability to get a job in the field and what types of jobs and if those are the ones you want.

I know what you're going through. I love Chem by the way. I'm in school and bipolar really affects it. If you can, I would talk to you're teachers and just let them know that you have some personal or family issues and I'm sure that they will understand and try to help you in some ways. Hope it works out for you.
