First of all forgive me because I think I posted this already a long time ago but I'm curious again.

How do certain meds like APs make you gain? Especially Zyprexa and the horror I heard about that weight gain. So do the meds just make you eat more or do they make you gain regardless? Like what if I were to be on Zyprexa but dieted? Would i still gain? I ask because I'm thinking of asking my pdoc about Zyprexa as a PRN for when I can't sleep. But having a long history of eating disorders, I'm terrified.

Seroquel is another culprit too. However I've never gained noticeable weight from it because of my eating disorder. I was doing good on my eating last month and was put back on seroquel and gained 4lbs. That triggered my disorder again and I lost the weight. I do want to work on my eating and get better but the weight gain from meds scare me. However if I could get by with eating healthy then I'll do that.

Any stories of experience or tips would really help!

Seroquel makes my hungry!! Constant hunger and cravings... Mirtazapine did the same. So I gain because I eat more! But I also believe that I gain weight "easier" when I'm on these meds. I just have to look at an ice cream and I've already gained if I don't have total focus on my food intake I gain about 0.5-2 lbs a week - and battling depression, focus isn't that easy for me.

For me, it's very very hard to follow a meal plan / diet when I take seroquel (very low dose! 25-75 mg)
I've gained 48 lbs (22 kgs) since I got hit by depression in february last year.... Not only because of seroquel, but also "just" comfort eating and other meds. So I'll try to find an alternative to seroquel.
Seroquel makes my head quiet in the evening and makes me able to fall a sleep. Without it I don't fall asleep untill 3am or so and I panic. I have to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea.

However, I think it is certainly possible to keep your weight stable or even lose weight while on APs!
And not everyone get this side effect.

If there is any alternative to zyprexa which doesn't have that side effect, I would take that. But otherwise I would try.... It's easier to control your weight when you feel good!

Maybe others have tried zyprexa and can tell you more.

i myself am on clozapine which i gained 50 lbs. i don't know if the weight gain is from that or from an operation i had to stop my menstrural cycle. i was wondering if there are any other good meds for depression as i am on meds for depression already, but i am still depressed. thanks

I guess you have to be careful. I've heard some of these meds have made people gain 100 lbs while increasing their cholesterol and increasing blood sugar levels. So, double check the cholesterol and blood sugar thing.

Zyprexa apparently increases cholesterol and blood sugar levels: The Trouble with Zyprexa | Psych Central Professional

So, if you do gain weight and stuff, you have to really monitor that. Def make sure to eat healthy.

I'm on Latuda, which doesn't cause weight gain, but it DOES increase your cholesterol. I'm 5'5" 105 and my cholesterol is 350!!! It's twice what it should be. I basically have the cholesterol of someone who's like 250 or 300 lbs, even though I eat relatively healthy. I now have to get off Latuda soon.

Best of luck

Some of them mess with your metabolism, and others cause you to have an increased appetite for carbs and sweet things.
Thanks for this!

Zyprexa made me gain 15 pounds in two weeks, eating normally. Pdoc took me off of it right away.

Zyprexa made me gain roughly fifteen pounds in two weeks too.

I think they **** with your metabolism. I've been off seroquel for three months and can actually feel that my metabolism is finally back to normal now! Bad stuff. I'd stay away unless you really need it.

Idk, but I feel you. I am terrified of my current cocktail not working and having to try one of the not so 'skinny' pills. Seriously, I would rather not take meds than get fat. I know that sounds horrible, but smh.

Appetite increases, my metabolism seems to slow and I get constipated from pills. It all adds up to a more Robust me.

Seroquel and Paxil made me eat like I had never seen food before...all day...every day. Could not get enough and was never full. I mean never.

I crave sweets when on meds too. Keeping bad foods out of the house is the only way for me. If we have a package of cookies, I eat the entire thing without coming up for air. Having an eating schedule and knowing what I plan to eat or cook ahead of time helps too. Plans are always better than no plan.

I'm not sure what Seroquel did to me. If it messed with my appetite, with my metabolism, or both. I gained quite a bit of weight with that one. At first, I ate more. When I noticed the extra weight starting to pack on, I began to diet. But no matter what I did, it was as if every calorie stuck to me and refused to leave.

I've gained about a hundred pounds since going on serious meds 20 years ago. I'm 5'3" and now weigh 215 pounds. I'm a 50 year old woman. I recently went to see my doctor about weight-neutral meds as i am on Seroquel but he said he wasn't optimistic that a change to an alternate AP would help as they are all weight-gainers as a class. I love Seroquel -- i sleep so well and am coming up on a year without a hm -- haven't gone this long ever! I've decided to put up with the weight gain. I was thin and fit and pretty until i was 30 -- that's more than some women get!

Latuda is supposed to be weight neutral, and I found it to be. Maybe you could try that?

My current cocktail is supposed to be weight neutral, but I already gained the weight. And I'm too lazy most of the time to lose it.

Geodon tends to be weight-neutral; in fact, I lost about 20# when I was first on it. Then I added the Zyprexa and the pounds came back...and brought friends! Trouble is, Zyprexa is the glue that holds me together and I've been on it for over 2 years, so I doubt I'm coming off of it anytime soon. So I just deal with the weight and thank God I haven't gained any more in the past year and a half.

I'm still trying to figure out why I gained twenty pounds this fall/winter. I know I went on Effexor and it made me completely starving so I ate ****** high calorie food and that's probably what did it. But I've never been good with losing weight. I just can't stick to a diet. I'll be happy now if I can maintain and not gain any more.

Me too! Dieting is hard work and the lbs stick if you're on certain meds.

The seroquel caused weight gain. Inexplicable hunger and cravings after supper. So I joined Weight Watchers 3 weeks ago and follow the program suggestions, food tracking, exercise, water, now I'm analyzing the cravings. I want to stop giving in to them by replacing my action urges to gobble yummies with a non food treat, to be figured out. Any suggestions!!!??? I need to stop gaining.

I'm great at losing weight. I'm just lousy at keeping it off and preventing weight gain. Pfffft.
