My diagnosis is atypical bipolar 1 with intermittent psychotic features. Can anyone tell me what the a-typical part means?

BP - Severe / Psychotic Episodes - Mild to Medium / Anxiety - Off The Scale / BPD - Mild - Drugs don't do a whole lot.

Bipolar 1=severe. Or at least it was until it was controlled with a good combination of meds. Now I'd say it's mild to moderate depending on the circumstances.

BP 1 - Moderate composed of all the following diagnosis;

Its a daily struggle to deal with it all.

Both BP and PTSD used to be severe but meds and therapy have brought them down to moderate or even mild at times. Still, I did have a bad episode that lasted December to March so I guess it can fluctuate.

How do you determine how 'severe' an MI is, because it seems to me that you'd have to judge it in relation or comparison to others' experiences and we just can't know that, not really.

i.e. in my mind, my BP1 is severe when it rears its ugly head, but surely there are those worse off? So maybe in relation to some others, it's 'moderate.' Same goes for anxiety. I just don't know...

Hadn't considered that and it makes sense -thanks. The two pdocs I've had and I haven't spoken in those terms but if we had, I guess that's what I'd go by as well.

I've had the same pdoc for 14 years and same psychologist for 10. They know me very well. They also both know that I am better off knowing that my illness is severe than blaming myself for failing to manage it better. So we go through this every so often when I start falling apart and insisting I'd be fine if I just handled things differently. That particularly has been true with my longing to work but being unable to do it. I worked very hard to work as long as I could and having to give that up and then sell my house and move next door to my mom really was hard for me to accept and I really needed to have help to accept that I was going to be ok again and that I hadn't failed.

BP 1- Told by pdocs wasn't severe until the my only full blown manic episode and psychosis. Controlled by many meds.

PTSD- Was very severe but with therapy and grounding skills much better.
