After 5 (or was it 6) Psych ER visits and waiting for a month and a half to get an appointment time I finally got my appointment time. Unfortunately I have to wait another 5 weeks but I have an appointment at the bipolar specific clinic on June 28th.

I'm still manic, miserable and unmedicated but at least I have an appointment.

Congratulations! *HUGS*

The wait may feel like forever, but you should have some relief knowing are going to be seen by a professional that is not an ER doctor. So, in the meantime, just continue to chat with us, okay?

It is definitely a relief to have an appointment. I actually got in really fast. It's usually a minimum three month wait to get an appointment. They said the ER referral and the one from my therapist were both strongly worded and indicated I needed to be seen as soon as possible.

My head is spinning from reading EU healthcare posts today. I thought it was better over there. It takes a really long time to get an appointment here in NYC too, and I have private insurance. You literally just call random doctors all day until one can take you!
I'm glad it's not a longer wait as expected, though! Could the ER give you a prescription that would last the 5 weeks until your appointment, now that you can prove you have an appointment set?

I'm so sorry it's so far away. Hopefully you can avoid the ER while you wait but if you need it, at least you can go back, right? I hope your appointment is good and you can achieve long term stability from it.
Thanks for this!

Yeah....we don't have it much better over here in the EU. I keep trying to explain this to family and friends back in the states, but oftentimes they just don't seem to want to hear it because they want socialism to be this amazing thing that will fix everything and it's not. It's just as messed up, the problems are just different.

Unfortunately the ER can't give me anything. ERs are not allowed to give out prescriptions in our healthcare system. Yeah can give you a day or two worth of pills to take home with you, but that's it. Even if your broke your arm they'd send you home with like two pain pills and expect you to contact your primary care doctor to get an appointment to get more if you needed them.

Yes I can go back to the ER whenever I need to, but right now the psychiatric ward is full. I've gotten sent home three times already when I should have been put on suicide watch. So if they got bad enough that I felt like I needed inpatient care I'd be kinda screwed. But if I needed to go get a day or two worth of meds for anxiety or something I could do that. But that's about it.

That is terrible. I feel so fortunate as to how easy it is for me to get care, (they force me even if I don't want it here). Are you safe right now? Do you have people who can look after you? I'm so sorry you are suffering so terribly.
Thanks for this!

My husband has been amazing during this time as far as looking after me. This is the first manic episode he's been through with me and after a suicide attempt several weeks back he's been doing everything he can to make sure I'm safe and cared for.

Is that the only hospital available to you, if we are talking suicide watch? Good to see you are all over the message board. Stay involved. Try to keep your brain busy. But maybe watch out for trigger warning posts

I think your writing is amazing. When I am manic, I sound like google translate.

Did you watch the Swedish show Real Humans? It was amazing! I would recommend watching that if you haven't seen it. There is a post with TV show recommendations in the BP forum you could look for...

There is only one hospital in Göteborg that treats psychiatric patients unfortunately. I even went to one of the hospitals in one of the surrounding communs and their ward was full as well. I've been trying to stay active on here, it definitely helps.

Thanks for the compliment! I love language and I love to write. I can become hyper aware of words and grammar and such when I am manic.

Real humans was fantastic! I very much enjoyed that show! I will have to look for the TV recommendations thread.
