So I had my last pdoc visit of the year last week. I have been hypomanic since I last spoke with him. I told him and that he laughed. He said, "what are you doing here then?" I explained the symptoms and he said if I wasn't "high" then I wasn't hypo and that I was "fine." Before this he doubled my Abilify because I had been severely depressed the two months before. Apparently in his eyes I am better, if there is such a thing. I have since come down to what I consider "normal." As I think back on it, it makes me angry because I am obviously cycling in a big enough way that it's troubling.

My pdoc is as brilliant as they come, but I think because I am not absolutely depressed, he doesn't really care. I thought he was someone who was on my side. Am I wrong? Am I just another case to push through the system?

He must have some sort of reasoning why he doesn't think you're hypomanic, maybe discuss it with him further next time you see him.

Either he is a jerk or he was having a really bad day. If he does have a reason he certainly should have explained it. Laughing you off was downright unprofessional.

I told him all of symptoms. Pacing constantly, rapid thoughts, barely sleeping, hyper sex drive, higher self confidence and opening my mouth when I just shouldn't. Those tick the all the right boxes. Maybe my definition of high is different than his, after all I have had my issues with getting high. I do know he said I was sleeping more than him... so maybe he was just off. I don't see him for another three months, unless things go south, which I am sure they will, they always do...

Thanks for the replies, when my pdoc and I are off, it makes the world even more lonely.

Hi Steven.
You may want a Psycologist. To do cbt. Then keep the pdoc for meds. I think the once every 90 days isn't enough.
Also look for a in person support group. I found a DBSA group that meets once per week and it really helps. Maxy

You definitely described the symptoms of hypo/mania to him. Maybe he was just having an off day, but with that list of symptoms I can't fathom why he didn't take you more seriously. I agree w/Ocean Swimmer that 90 days isn't frequent enough, and that finding a psychologist or therapist, and a r/l support group, would be good things.

Yeah that's definitely a strange reaction to the symptoms you described. It my experience if they even think fora sec hypomania is even possible in the weather forecast they go nuts!
Which would then drive me nuts!
He was probably having an off day
Hope you are ok

Wow..that would make me so uncomfortable/upset. Right now I'm not acting stereotypically high but I'm definitely hypomanic and my pdoc could see that. And it's definitely a problem that your pdoc should not be dismissing because it just continues the dreaded cycle.

Well, my pdoc has left the building. Actually he went to another hospital which means I have to start all over again with another doc. Ugh. Not again.

That sucks Steven. I hope you can find a new pdoc who you can have strong rapport with. I had to leave my pdoc of two years because my insurance changed. He got me stable. I see my new pdoc on the 8th. If we don't hit it off, or he wants to change my meds I'll find another pdoc. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Wish the last pdoc I spoke to had laughed, I would've have laughed with him! Maybe even tap danced on his desk.

Instead he wanted to be Major Buzz Kill and tried forcing ample amounts of pills down my throat, which I promptly stashed away in my cupboard.

Sounds like your pdoc was encouraging you to enjoy the ride, as what you described sounded manageable. Not much of this beast is enjoyable, so I'm all for milking the good bits. That's if you're lucky to even get any in the first place.

Hope the new pdoc is more suited to your needs.

I think your pdoc may have just been pleased to see you NOT depressed, and mistook what you know as hypo for a normal mood. I'm sure you're not just another case....

I'm sorry you went through that. You would think that, as a pdoc, he would know better. My psychiatrist acts like she doesn't really believe me, but she keeps prescribing me meds.

Hmm.. the symptoms you mentioned sounds very reminiscent to hypermania. There could be various reasons for your psychiatrist acting the way he did. Maybe he was having an off day or was pleased to hear you weren't depressed (as others in this thread have mentioned) -- who knows? You'll never find out since he switched hospitals. Either way, pretty unprofessional and you're probably better off seeing someone else.

I'm sorry for what you're going through. This must be really frustrating. If it makes you feel better, I had two different doctors basically push me out the door. As much as it hurt, I finally gave in, saw a psychiatrist and was finally given an answer to why I was feeling so despondent.

In other words, a door has closed for you, friend, but another one will soon open.

Well, maybe it's for the best that you'll need to start with a new one. You deserve someone who really listens to you and addresses your concerns.
