I'd like to hear from anyone who uses or has used cannabis regularly/daily to help with their bipolar disorder. I found it to be extremely helpful and was using daily from ages 16-20. Never had any issues and I wasn't diagnosed. At age 20 I was given Prozac while smoking regularly and had a severe manic episode with psychosis that lasted 3 weeks after I stopped both. Some doctors tell me I can never smoke again and that it was the weed, but from my research and conversations with other doctors, they say it was the Prozac.

I haven't smoked in about a year now. I'm stable on lithium and just got my medical marijuana card again for PTSD, and they knew about my bipolar 1 and medications. I'll be starting in a few weeks again when my card comes in the mail.

With so much mixed info out there on the Internet and with doctors, I'd like to know your thoughts and experiences. I am NOT asking if it makes you paranoid or experience weird things for the hour while you're intoxicated. I'm talking about developing severe psychosis from prolonged use.

Have you ever used cannabis regularly? Were you on other medications? Have you ever experienced psychosis just from cannabis?

Was a heavy, daily smoker until three weeks ago. Had been for years. It turned on me this year and made my BP worse. I also kept smoking more and more so it was unsustainable. Like before breakfast till just before bed. My doc claimed the weed was messing with my meds. We will see. Off three weeks and I am still a mess.

When you say it made your bp worse, what do you mean? Any psychosis? And are you on any mood stabilizers or other meds? What about other factors other than cannabis that could be the underlying issue?

Also, what strains are you smoking recently before this happened? Any CBD or just high THC strains?

I smoked weed almost daily from 1992 to about five years ago or so. I smoke less now mostly because of the cost. My pdoc knows I smoke and he is okay with it. I have not had it affect my mood/bipolar in a negative way.

Have you ever experienced psychosis from any other drugs or extended manic episodes for any reason? Not sure if someone who's bipolar WITH psychosis would be worse off than you.

I have had auditory hallucinations but it was not due to smoking weed. My hallucinations started when I was highly stressed because my then teenage son was inpatient in a psych facility for a month. I have not had hallucinations in probably close to a decade.

My mood swings have been stable since autumn 2007 when my pdoc put me on a combination of psych meds that are effective for me.

High THC strains. It seemed to make me more mixed and wild in general (in a bad way). No psychosis. I am on Lithium and Lamotrigine (mood stabilisers) Latuda and Saphris (Anti-psychotics) and Clonazepam for anxiety. A lot, I know. A couple started recently. So I really don't know if the weed messed me up or the meds aren't helping me, or both. Very unwell right now so something is not right.

I smoke regularly. No severe psychosis, just lightweight audio hallucinations. My pdoc says weed is fine for bp1 UNLESS you have had severe psychosis. You might want to be careful

I find hash is more effective, Makes me tired all the time. Which is a good thing in my books. But when i stop smoking i start to become unstable. When i don't smoke i think i am the best at everything, Think i'm invincible etc & Lose a lot of weight. Last time i stopped smoking i was walking everywhere i went, Not eating & not sleeping. I also walked across the wall of a very high bridge because i thought i couldn't die. So yeah, Hash is the only thing i need to control my symptoms.

I use cannabis to treat my chronic pain. I do not think it effects my bipolar negatively for the most part. I've had severe psychosis while smoking, and severe psychosis while abstaining for years. I did have one doctor try to tell me it was the weed. I was impatient and they told me how many weed induced psychosis patients they admit. I think it coincidence due to people self medicating. Correlation does not equal causation.

With that said, during mania I once started smoking a ton of Sativa. Sativa seems to fuel my mania. Indica works better for me if I'm elevated and Sativa if depressed. Like I said, I use cannabis for chronic pain, but I have noticed it can effect mood. We need to be careful using it. After what you went through, it's no surprise you have lots of questions about cannabis and its role in what happened to you. I hope you receive the answers you seek. Good luck.
