Have any of you had experience implementing Distress tolerance skills, I get it
but I cannot seem to put them into use when I have hot thoughts. They just take over and have their way with me. I am going through severe marital problems and I am struggling to deal with these emotions. I have been working hard to use my skills, but DBT has always been a challenge for me.

The key is persistence. It gets easier over time.

There is a very helpful site online: DBT Self Help

This site is run by peers, all learning to implement DBT skills.

Do you have a therapist to talk to about your marital problems? DBT skills are good but for really serious stuff you could benefit from talking to a professional.

I go to a weekly dbt group, and I agree, in the heat of the moment the skills dissolve

It takes a lot of practice for the skills to come to mind when you are in distress. I made a pocket sized cheat sheet of skills to have with me when my mind goes blank. I still struggle but it's easier now.

Practice!!

-------I think role playing in a group would help. I hear many hospitals have dbt groups. I am studying it online but I am having the same problem as u in implementing it. Sometimes we need a family counselor. Sometimes we just have to wait for the tough times to pass..........

^^I found this DBT handbook to be a helpful guide, although I totally agree it can be very difficult using the distress tolerance skills at certain times.
