Those of you with a prn, did your pdoc just prescribe them to you, or did you request them? I don't really have bad anxiety, but there are moments when I think they would come in handy...like now. I haven't been able to sleep for the past three days. And I'll randomly have moments where I get worked up and have a hard time calming down. It's especially frustrating if it happens at work because it messes with my productivity. I'm debating whether or not I should ask her for something. I just don't know if this is something I should do since some pdocs can be stingy with stuff like that. At least my last one was, not so sure about this one.

If you are talking about benzos, The first time they were prescribed I asked for them through my general practitioner. He gave me .5mg Ativan. I'm sorry you are struggling and hope you find something to help.

I decided to go for it and email her to see what she says. What's the worst that can happen. I would love some Xanax, but I've abused it in the past. My last pdoc gave me Vistaril and that worked as needed. So did klonopin, but I was given that daily for one month and not as needed. It's midnight and I have two be up in five hours to get ready for work. My usual method of unwinding at the end of the day, putting together puzzles, is doing the complete opposite lately.

I have Klonapin as prn. I take 1MG daily but I can take up to 2.5 MG if I start to become manic or if I get too wound up.
I also have Haldol as a prn that was prescribed for "voices" but I can take it if I am struggling with any psychotic symptoms. Both were prescribed; I wouldn't have known what to ask for.

Its funny to read this thread assuming pnr means porn.
My doc never recommend the porn but it definitely is good for anxiety. I don't want to ask for the porn because I'm afraid he will be into things that aren't interesting enough to get me off. Sorry ignore me |

I was first described benzos. To be taken regularly. This was then stopped, as I was coping a bit better.
I now highlighted to my pdoc how bad my anxiety and depression gets at times and I asked her if I can have a benzo prn. And I got it. Only 10 per month as I have in the past abused it.

I take Vistaril as PRN and it helps with the anxiety, plus it makes me sleepy. My pdoc's office doesn't prescribe benzos. I guess it's easier for them not to since they also see substance abusers under court-ordered treatment.

I wouldn't ask for a benzo specificaly. They could think you're a druggie. I'd just ask if there's a prn you could take for your anxiety.

I did hear back yesterday and I picked it up today. I ended up with Vistaril. Which is fine, I've used it before and I'm cool with it. I didn't specifically ask for a benzo, and just asked her for something. I think I've told her I od'd on Xanax anyway. But knowing myself, I would probably abuse benzos anyway.

I think asking for a PRN is a good idea. My boyfriend has bipolar 1 and switched recently to a new pdoc (prior one moved away) and he has a PRN rx for seven 1 mg Klonopin that he can refill weekly. He has occasional anxiety.
All pdocs are different. I'm rx'd 1 mg of Klonopin four times per day. But that's just me. It's for anxiety and mania. I think patients deserve a say in what meds they will and will not take. |

For me, I never ask for a specific drug. I describe my symptoms and we go from there. |
