I've had a lot of noise sensitivity and associated irritability.

I used to think this was all due to CPTSD, yet recently saw this mentioned in a BP magazine.

Do you experience irritability triggered by noise sensitivity?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Ohhh, yeah. Screaming children and repetitive sounds are the worst!

100%! It can be any noise, really - background noise builds and builds until I realize that it's slowly making me crazy! Repetitive sounds are bad for me also...unless I'm making them, ha! My kids, especially my youngest, like to make noise simply for the sake of making noise. It drives me up the wall.

I've gotten much better since working on mindfulness with my T a few years back and identifying where I am in my stimulus meter - I can let my kids know now BEFORE I blow my top that I need the noises to stop or the volume of whatever they're doing/playing to go way down. I'll go into my room and give myself a time out sometimes just to get the quiet, because I know I'm seriously overstimulated by noise.

My husband teases me that I could wake in the night from the sound of dew forming...but seriously - that s**t is LOUD!

Sounds really irritates me when I'm depressed or especially mixed. I've had to take the batteries out of my living room clock. Can't handle loud or repetitive sounds.

Certain noises above a certain volume have a tendency to evoke a mental and physical response from me. My irritability shoots up and after awhile I'll actually start shaking. If I don't remove myself from the environment, I risk outbursts that I don't want.

Yes I get like this when mixed. And boy is it fun when my two step kids are running around screaming. Many times I've hidden in my room. Then there's sounds outside the house. Screaming children, people on phones etc. But oddly, I do like the sound of trains. I find it relaxing. Weird.

Mines a little different. I wouldn't 100% say that I get irritated but if I'm aware of ambient chattering I can get extremely paranoid and my mind goes on the defensive.... And then i want to get away from the ambient chattering so it doesn't make the situation worse. For example, restaurants are a night mare for me...

I have always had it.
A loud T.V. will drive me insane.
Sometimes the sound of someone chewing will do the same.

definitely. yesterday these annoying planes were practicing for their air show and I nearly had a panic attack. then my husband was taping some boxes together and the sound of the tape being ripped off...I'm pretty sure I fell out of love for those 10 minutes. I ended up picking fights with people and I wonder if it had anything to do with the noise.

coughing and barking repeatedly also drive me crazy.

Yes I do, when there's a lot of noise outside, construction, cars, the neighbor kids (they're always screaming bloody murder outside) I just want to scream "shut the F up!" Even my dog barking is annoying to me when I'm already irritable, luckly I have ear plugs that I can put in if needed, also I listen to music to calm me down (the only noise that doesn't irritate me when I'm irritable)...

I've never really thought about, but now that you mention it, I do get irritable with some sounds and noises. I agree with the loud tv. Whenever I visit my parents I always have to tell my mother to turn it down, otherwise I leave the room.

Oh I forgot to mention I have a cockatoo! When she's talking I don't mind but it's the screeching that drives my blood pressure through the roof. My bf asked our neighbor is our bird is bothering him and he goes "no but I can hear your gf yelling shut up all day" lol.

This happens to me on occasion. I went to the pharmacy today to get refills on my meds. The pharmacist's assistant spoke with such volume that I felt like she was attacking me. It didn't make me mad, but it stressed me out.

Sometimes innocent chitter chatter from people around me makes me feel like I'm being attacked. It just sounds so loud.

The most annoying sound to me is when my hubby brushes his teeth with an electric tooth brush. He is a musician and likes to make different sounds when he brushes his teeth. I can tolerate this when he is in his bath room but when he gets in bed and is right next to me I can hardly stand it!!!!!!!!
I have told him how much this annoys me and he continues....it is like a passive aggressive thing.
sigh

I get this often. Sometimes I can crank music up to full blast in my car, and other times I need complete silence. Noises can make me so jittery and like I want to crawl right out of my skin.

I will get SOOOO agressive. People who just won't blow their noses when having a cold, people doing the click click with their pens, peolple wibbling (might be I just invented that word in English, no idea, but I think you'll get me) their legs, people murmuring, coughing, snoring, turning pages of their books even, and I will have the strong desire to harm them like real badly. Hate myself in those moments for being that intolerant. Always thought something was really strange about me, like in the sense of being a bad person. Recently linked it to bipolar.

We had one where I live---thank God and Greyhound it's gone now!---that almost literally made me crazy. I honestly don't know how people can stand those birds. It barked when the dogs barked, and that screeching was more than I could cope with. Ugh!

Then there's the deal with having the TV and music on at the same time. Totally makes me crazy. It has to be one or the other...can't have both. I yelled at my grandson last night for cranking up his music while I was trying to watch TV. Yikes!

I don't like intrusive noise, like the tv being loud in the other room, or a vacuum cleaner running, clanging dishes, dogs barking. It grinds on me really bad sometimes. I also have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) really severe, and I try to ignore it most of the time, but sometimes it drives me over the edge and feels like some kind of ancient torture mechanism.

Sometimes the smallest sound can bother me if I know it's there. And sometimes I am oblivious to everything and I have no sense of hearing. It happens when I am trying to sleep, that's when it most gets to me.

But yes, it does happen to bipolar people I think.

It's a coincidence this thread has re-surfaced just now, lol.

I am sitting here, listening to the very quiet keys of my husband's computer.
He's in the room and is typing on his laptop. It's quite irritating!

If my phone texting message sounds -- I might say a naughty word -- because sounds are going right through my Being today. (I have now silenced text alerts and as many other noises as possible.)

Hubby is across the room and when all is silent, I can hear his watch ticking -- too loudly! That quiet "tick" is banging through my brain!

I've been much more irritable lately.

Last week I thought I'd either have a stroke or would get into a brawl with a mother and grandmother, as they let their 5 year old daughter continue repeated very high-pitched screeching, at the top of her lungs all through dinner at a restaurant. I have never seen adults allow such behavior, especially at a restaurant. Staff was very apologetic. They could not reason with the adults. The adults in the group had told staff the child could do whatever she wishes.

And now -- hubby is quietly listening to his ipod, with earphones, across the room -- and it's way too loud for me! I will not nag him. He is trying so hard to be very considerate and I love his company. Yet -- wow! The watch is now ticking louder than the music! My ears and my brain!

Yeh, noises can drive me wild when mixed or depressed, even manic. When stable I am fine with the usual noises in life. What also happens to me, and I am sure many of you, is that when mixed and manic I tend to be hyper-aware of sights, sounds, smells and sensations and my brain takes in every little piece of information at a rapid pace and this makes me overwhelmed as my mind is already racing.

Right now I am in my room while IP and avoiding going to groups as I feel paranoid about being around people and don;t think I could stand all the stimulation of the talking, radio and colourful room. SO I am hiding instead, talking to you wonderful people.

I absolutely experience this, especially during mania, including mixed mania. When it happens while I'm experiencing mixed mania, it is especially disturbing. I feel hypervigilent and super sensitive when it comes to every little noise....and I must avoid malls during that time with all the echoing. Noises that would not normally bother me cause me to feel irritable. Even certain sounds in music start to sound different than usual. It's strange.
