so i'm going to go ahead and do this.. i created a thread a while ago asking if anyone would be interested in a movie club, and i suggester silver lineing's as our first movie
so what do you all think of it? (those of you who have seen it) the movie is good. bradley cooper is in a perfect role (having BP anyway), and the romance between him and tifany is a good plot what annoyed me the most about the movie was the ending. it was so predictable. your thoughts then |

I didn't see this, just the original thread. I just saw this last week. Yah, the ending was kind of cheesy, especially the dance results part. With potentially heavy subject matter they just wanted a happy ending I guess.
What did you think of the psychiatrist portrayal? |

The physiatrists portrayal wasn't the most realistic. How did you guys feels about the psychiatrist playing that song to intentionally try to trigger him while he was in a room full of people?

I thought that was ridiculous. I didn't really think it was that great of a movie. It was ok...

I think the movie was suppose to be a little magical on purpose. We all know much of the stuff that happened wasn't feasible but i think it was meant to be like that

I thought that was ridiculous too and would never happen, especially if they had never met. Otherwise portrayed as a very warm person and was referred to and acted more as therapist than psychiatrist. No psychiatrist I've ever been to drills down that deeply into personal life or would hug if they saw me outside clinic setting.

What part (if any) did you find yourself most identifying with?
For me it was when he stormed into his parents room to passionately assert his feelings towards the book in his ex wife's syllabus. The energy he had in that scene was easy for me to relate to. |

I can completely relate to the scene where he is waking his parents up in the middle of the night to search for his wedding video in their room at 3 AM where he is tearing through their stuff looking for it and accusing his mom of hiding it. It was really common for me to get fixated on a really random missing item in the middle of the night, and I'd start accusing people in my house of misplacing it and search for it for hours in hysterics, even if it's just a $5 unimportant item that I haven't used in years (but in my head, I'm going to use this item for a "very important purpose").
I can also relate to when he is expressing his feelings about the Ernest Hemmingway book..... My poor mom for all the times I stormed into her room! |

I know I saw it, but it didn't make much of an impression because I've completely forgotten it.

First, I want to thank you for having this topic and discussion. I love movies and am always on the lookout for good bipolar movies. So far, have not found one and I've looked for 20 years. Mr. Jones was the closest I've found. I plan to watch several of the ones people have posted! So thanks everyone. I personally didn't like Silver Linings Playbook. If they guy was as out of it as he was in the movie, why was he ever released from the hospital? Why did his mother want him to be? So unrealistic. I couldn't relate to any of it. I particularly did not like the female lead. If I met a real person who looked and acted like her, I'd run far and fast. I turned it off after about half.

The first time I watched it, I didn't really like it but watched it again and started to get it. I watched it twice more and I like it more each time.

I too have seen this movie several times and feel it gets a little better each time. The parents in the movie reminded me of my own parents very much. The movie is on Netflix.

I seen this movie while in a PHP program, and it was good, a bit unrealistic at times, but I did identify with the storming into the bedroom scene where he looks.for the wedding video, I've torn my whole house apart in the middle of the night before looking for things, and yeah freaking out thinking said item was hidden or thrown away. My grandparents probably weren't happy with me at the time...

Honestly, I identified so little with bradley cooper's character that I wondered if he even had bipolar. But I know every person is different, it just happens that my brand of bipolar is different from his I guess. I don't really get all the angry like he does. I lose control in other ways.
I didn't like the portrayal of his therapist, either. I know there's lots of different approaches to therapy but if my therapist ever intentionally triggered me like that, I would immediately walk out and never come back. That is not okay.

Excelsior!
![]() I thought the movie was "okay." ![]() I have seen it 3 times over 2 years and understood the characters better each time. I was happy to see he gets over his ex, realizing he has something more real and more mutually-accepting, more validating, with someone new. He mentions how he and his ex were always wanting to change one another. In the new relationship, they each see one another's faults, yet are happy with one another despite imperfections. These two characters initially experience some fear; yet, in time, they bring out the best in one another. Mutual love and acceptance can make a difference, can help sometimes. ![]() WC |

I found that my bipolar had little to do with what was portrayed in the movie, like AnnieLovesBacon. But i get discrete episodes of high and low mood and their's seem more mixed. Also the lack of 'filter' they both had, saying whatever came into their heads, was not a feature i have ever found in myself or any other bipolar.
I think any portrayal of bipolar that is not negative is welcome tho. And it opened up the public dialogue about bipolar as well. So while i thought it was silly at least it promoted awareness in a fairly positive light. |

I can observe the lack of filter, yet cannot do anything to change it -- until I am getting out of the episode. I felt they'd balanced demonstrating types of behaviors, showing he had some vulnerabilities and some struggles while being a well-intentioned person, which counters much of the stigma of bipolar. I agree this portrays bipolar in a positive light. ![]() WC |

My understanding that he had a fixed "sentence" in the hospital because of a "guilty in lieu of insanity" plea. 8 months would be pretty long to keep someone otherwise. For someone who wasn't taking meds he didn't seem to be that out of it.

I don't understand how he was able to get away with not taking his meds for six months. Wouldn't a nurse have noticed after the first couple of days?! They watch you like a hawk in places like that. Also, pills randomly on the floor? How could they not notice him spitting them out? He should have waited and flushed them instead. That would be more believable.
I related to the scene where he's raving/raging about the book to his parents too. Hell, I've done that before with my husband. lol! I've thrown books too when they've pissed me off. Never through a window though. Just... how was he able to get away with not taking his meds for six months? For whatever reason I can't get over that. Also, is he manic when he's released from the hospital? I couldn't really tell in all honesty.

I saw Silver Linings Playbook about a year ago. I barely remember any of it, so I guess it didn't make much of an impression on me.

Not to mention he complains about effects of certain meds to Tiffany so he must have tried them for a while He doesn't really seem manic to me at beginning And blaming bipolar for being upset at catching his wife having sex with other man is not fair some how |
