Lately I've been consuming more caffeine than usual (because sleeping poorly) and I've noticed that the effects can mimic hypomania (but isn't). The effect can last an extra day, but then it calms down once the caffeine is truly out of my system.
The problem too is that if after the caffeine is out of your system, and then you go back on excessive caffeine, the same scenario can play out again and then it can seem like rapid cycling (but it isn't). Have any of you felt like you're in a hypomanic state only to realize that it was caffeine-induced and then calmed down once you've stopped the caffeine (or at least excessive amounts)? |

Yes, especially when overly tired (having not slept in 24 hours or very little over the span of several days).
I've had psychotic episodes less severe than some of these reactions.

My meds make me groggy so I drink a lot of coffee... and I like my double espresso whenever we're travelling. I can drink three pots of coffee in a day (I regularly do.) and not feel any effect other than staying awake until 10pm. Anyhow, my telltale sign for hypomania is elation and coffee certainly doesn't get me there. I sure wish it would.

I love me some caffeine. I do have to be somewhat conscious of my consumption because lack of sleep can push me towards mania.

I used to abuse caffeine pills. I would take three or four at a time because I loved the "high" I got. That was ten years ago. Now caffeine makes me sick. I can't even have a cup of coffee. I drink decaf of everything, although I can have caffeinated soda once in awhile. But I used to live the shaky feeling I got from too much caffeine.

My caffeine tolerance goes up and down. When I'm down my tolerance goes up so I drink a lot more coffee but when I'm up I can't drink it at all or I get shaky and have panic attacks. Not sure if it's BP related tho.

I don't drink much caffeine. I'll occasionally have a Red Bull, Rockstar, or Mountain Dew Kickstart, but that's about it.
Even when I drink 2 energy drinks in a row, it doesn't do much for me mood wise. Now, if I'm manic already, it certainly feeds the mania. It keeps me up at night, and the less sleep you have, the worse mania becomes (at least in my experience). |

I can't drink caffeinated beverages due to these types of reactions, that and my body just doesn't tolerate caffeine very well, my heartbeat goes weird and I get shaky and stuff like that, but yeah I don't even drink caffeinated pop anymore...

I like caffeine, a lot. It helps me focus and feel less sleepy, plus many forms of caffeine are just plain delicious.
It doesn't make me feel hypomanic, though. If only! haha Honestly, most of the time I could down a venti coffee and experience no effects other than increased alertness.

If I'm anxious or feeling up, I avoid caffeine. If I'm sleepy it sometimes helps and sometimes not. About 3 years ago when I had a very bad episode, I was drinking 2-3 cans of Rockstar per day. I wonder if it contributed to my episode. Can caffeine induce delusions?

I am not sensitive to caffeine. It's likely a tolerance issue. I bleed Diet Coke lol
No aspartame or diet drink posts please, I will not change. I LOVE crushed ice and eat it all day. So that's water. I'm getting OT, ttyl. |

I once acted like a total idiot after drinking too much caffiene. My therapist knew I was't manic and asked me if the white chocolate mocha I was sucking down was such a good idea. I was so embarrassed I called her later to apologize.

YES I love my Diet Coke, even though I go for decaf when I can. I know the artificial sweetener isn't good but God dammit it's just so delicious. I've been unsuccessful in every attempt to give it up. And I don't even care anymore lol.

I cut down on caffeine, and it has made a difference. If I'm hypo/manic, caffeine only makes it worst. Sleep was getting impossible. I used to drink Red Bull regularly, but now I only drink it occasionally and avoid it at all costs if feeling even the slightest signs of hypomania.
