I'm struggling to decide whether to go with my boyfriend to visit his brother and other family members in early September. He's going for a week, but we agreed that if I do go,I will travel on Monday, stay the rest of the day, overnight, and Tuesday, and return on Wednesday. I would like to meet his family, but mainly for his sake. I am not a happy traveler. I will likely never see any of these people again, and I've never met them at all yet. If the plane ride will be noisy, I will not go. I also expect the airport ambience is noisy. I get very irritated, antsy and upset in noisy environments. I leave noisy environments! But obviously I could not leave a plane. I'm worried this could damage our relationship.

I guess a jet a bit noisy, but you tune it out after like 2-3 minutes. The noisiest part is when you takeoff. That's it, really.
You could always get noise-cancelling headphones or ear plugs. Airports can be noisy, but it depends on which one. Not all of them are noisy. For example, JFK and Boston are noisy most of the time. Newark and Baltimore, on the other hand, not so much... If you go really early in the morning, at like 1am or 2am, everyone is sleeping on the seats. It's not noisy at all |

I'm highly sensitive to noise too, but I don't find flying intolerable. Airports aren't fun but the time spent in them is usually pretty short. Like the previous poster said, noise-canceling headphones and ear plugs can be useful in blocking out the worst of it. Go on your trip...you'll do fine.

The flight itself isn't noisy unless you're going to Disneyworld with a bunch of 4 year old kids. It's more of a white noise, akin to a low din or hum.

Thank you all! This helps alleviate my anxiety. I have some ear plugs with baffles in them. They are designed for musicians. They help but aren't the best. I will check into noise cancelling head phones.

Definitely look into noise canceling headphone! They make flying so much better! You don't really hear the jets at all! I also use them in everyday life such as on the bus and when I just can't handle all the noise around me. Depending on how much you can/want to spend, I can recommend a pair for you -- it is part of what I do for a living!

Dear Sing Dance Run Life. Great! Thanks so much! I need them on the bus, too! I don't want to spend $300-400. I saw a set by Sony online that says it can be used as wired or bluetooth, that some planes don't allow bluetooth. I have also lost some hearing Normal hearing can perceive as low as 20 decibels I can only hear down to 35 decibels. So I need a headset for my cell phone. I had a good one but within 2 weeks of buying it, I lost it. So I am in the market for another one. I wonder if there is a headset that would function as both noise cancelling AND sound enhancement for my cell phone. Is that possible? Sounds unlikely. Could you private message me, so we can discuss further?

Certainly you can find headphones that do both. One of the purposes of noise cancellation is to enhance the music (or talk) you're listening to by focusing your concentration.

Dear wonderfalls and SingDanceRunLife, that would be excellent if I could find those. But I do not know what words to use, to hunt for them. Do either of you know how to find such a pair? The cell phone headset I lost cost $104.00. I have already ordered another pair but could cancel if a dual function set turns up that is less than $300.00. I talked to the dealer about noise cancelling phones and they said I want one that is 100% noise cancellation, that the ones they carry only do 80%. PS Turns out I can't go on this trip after all. The cost of changing the date on the ticket is prohibitive.
