Antipsychotics can contribute to causing diabetes (IMO). Being overweight can certainly contribute..
I asked the doctor about this (before I had to stop them due to being allergic) - the reply was only on "higher" doses. Honest answer, I don't know for sure. Sending peaceful thoughts and hugs ![]()

The newer antipsychotic medicines can bring it out, You have to read on which drug your taking, I got mine from Seroquel, But all those new ones

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but once you have diabetes you pretty much always have diabetes. I have seen some people eat an extremely low carb diet and exercise an extreme amount come off of their medications but I am not sure it was with a drs supervision or not. I personally don't think extreme low carb is healthy though. I do pretty much whats recommended. 45 grams of carbs per meal (for females) and 15 grams of carbs per snack. My diabetes has gotten worse though or the metformin has lost its effectiveness and I had to be put on a second medicine. Personally I wish they would just put me on insulin and stop fooling around with these pills. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you cant just not have diabetes once its started. It just don't work that way. There is no magical cure. PS don't just go off your diabetes medicine because diabetes is serious and can, and probably will, mess your body up. Mine has started working on my kidneys and also my eyes. I am leaking protein in my urine now but I have yet to see the kidney dr to see how bad it is (they are real backed up and its hard to get an appointment.) I have a year, maybe two left till I have to have eye surgery on both of my eyes due to cataracts. The eye dr said the diabetes made them grow much faster than they would have if I didn't have this crap. So don't just go off the medication. Diabetes can cause you to loose a leg and a whole lot of other problems. Hugs Last edited by p00dlez; Sep 06, 2016 at 05:47 AM. Reason: Add commet |

Antipsychotic drugs can elevate blood sugar and make people gain weight. Weight gain I think is a proven way to become diabetic. Or at least be prone to it. I am diabetic but I was diagnosed before I took Depakene. This was at least 15 years before Depakene. That is the only BP med I was ever prescribed.

I had DM before I was ever put on anti-psychotics. I'm on metformin, just one 500 mg tab per day, and it's kept my blood sugars down very well. I have also been able to go off of it when I lose weight, although I don't think it'll happen that way again as I am getting nothing but older. Honestly, I don't think Zyprexa has made it worse. But maybe I'm just lucky.

Metformin did not make me loose weight at all. I am on it now and have been for several years and I have not lost a pound. The only thing I can say that metformin has really done besides helping to control my blood sugar (although its pretty much crapped out now) is to give me severe gastric distress which isn't good to talk about in polite company if you know what I mean. I don't want to say it is TMI.
That's basically why I want to go on insulin. I am sick to death of being in the bathroom. There are times I cant even leave the house because I have to stay close to the bathroom. Tired of taking amodium all the time, If I could convince this stupid dr to put me on something else I would. I am getting a new dr in November and I am going to do my best to convince her to take me off this crap. |
