I am not trying to be dumb, but I have yet to find any definitions that really explain to me what the difference is. My husband was dx'd bp after a severe trauma. He doesn't have any mania, except occasionally extremely talkative. Mostly he is depressed. Quiet, doesn't talk much at all. We have much on our plates and he mostly sits at his computer and browses different sites. He's a fisherman and hunter, so that's mostly the sites he visits. Please help me help him. Yes, he's on meds. Any kind of antidep. has severe side effects. He's taking gabapentin 400 mg. right now. Thanks. for your help.

My understanding is BP 1 is manic and BP 2 is mostly depression with some hypo mania maybe thrown into the mix. See what other people say on here
Thanks for this!

Im not a doctor but it sounds like he is bp2. Bp1 has full blown manic episodes. Think, not sleeping more than 4 hours for days at a time, losing track of reality, racing thoughts, chasing thrills of any kind, delusions, sense of grandeur. Bp 2 has hypomania, which is similar but doesn't get out of control to the point of delusions and losing touch with reality.
When hypomania tips into mania, things get really scary and you may feel like you are looking at a different person altogether. I know when I'm manic I feel completely invincible and I also have no idea what is actually going on. Bp2 also has more depression than mania.
Thanks for this!

Whether a person is bipolar 1 or 2 depends on the degree of mania they experience. Sometimes there's a very thin line between 1 and 2; what one pdoc calls BP1 may be BP2 to another. For instance, I was BP NOS with one pdoc, but another one, plus a therapist plus a psych nurse practitioner, diagnosed me with BP1. I believe them because I've had full-blown mania and psychosis, as well as significant depression.

I've worked in the mental health field + studied the DSM.....
BP1= You've had at least one manic episode before or mixed mania, where you meet full criteria for both mania and depression concurrently. Manic symptoms last for at least a week straight to be considered an episode, unless the person ends up hospitalized...then a full week wouldn't be needed for diagnosis. Psychosis is not uncommon during the manias/mixed-manias, although this is not a requirement for BP1 and usually is secondary to mania.

BP2= You've experienced Hypomania (lower level mania), but never full-blown manic episodes. Mixed symptoms would not meet full criteria for mania either. Depressive episodes tend to be predominant.

The DSM-5 lists full criteria for those who are curious further about distinguishing the two. Sometimes the criteria is tricky and two pdocs may not agree on it being BP1 or 2 since some of it is subjective. So it can be confusing.

Thanks! It seems to be a very fine line between type 1 and type 2.

Thank You all. Your information has been very helpful. I think it's more BP2 also, if not outright plain old MDD.

I have bp2 .I was diagnosed that because I don't get as manic as others do ....I get VERY anxious VERY often and also VERY depressed...when your hubby does not leave the computer it is probably because that is all he has the energy for.
I know the feeling.
You are doing great joining our site here to learn more!
Best wishes to you both
