Anyone else find social media to be super triggering when you are depressed? I check it out of habit, and I need to just stop. It makes me feel so much worse.

Social media can make a person feel like everyone else is having the time of their life. I don't think it is a true representation though. Social media to me is like an advertising service, convincing others why they should envy the life of someone else. If I am feeling like I am missing out, or lonely, then I too feel worse if I look at posts about people enjoying life.

I find it... kind of strange. It feels very abnormal to me. I am having a hard time finding the words most closely representing my perception of social media. Cannot find the words.

If everyone is so happy and having such a good time, why the need to post about life to the world? All the world's a stage... Lol!

I don't have FB because I don't want the drama, esp family drama. Neither do I want the "time/energy depletion."

I truly have all I can do to be present in life for myself, my husband, my mother (lives with us and needs help with lots of things) and a couple of friends.

One of my nieces set my mother up with FB last week and -- uggh! Let the drama begin! The **** I don't want to know, right? If my mother cannot handle FB, cannot cope with the info. (which is why she'd left it 3 years ago), then she'll have to give it up. I'm not listening to it. She'd needed help with it yesterday. I helped for 5 minutes-- triggers galore! I do not want FB, not even on her behalf. She will have to figure it out!

I enjoy a semi-private life. I don't crave the attention.

Heck yea!!! That's why I no longer have an active Facebook account. And with my Twitter and IG accounts I have very few followers and I follow only a couple of close friends and mostly people I don't know (news, celebrities, memes, etc.). I still don't check those regularly (well I have been on IG a lot lately, it comes and goes).

I only have a FB account, and that is only for a few friends. I don't track it as much. I got rid of my other accounts when one of them got hacked.

In my area, Facebook is a tool for all the pseudo-important people to spew their propaganda. Digital Nazi's.

It's also how I found out another mule was kicking around in my stall. (Cheating ex)

This place is just alright by me, but I can live without the rest of them.

I agree with you all! I don't have a facebook account. Makes me depressed and it is not a true representation of life?! I only have a pinterest account for hobbies and quotes and interesting things just for myself. No instagram or twitter. I don't understand the logic behind sharing every single thing with the world.

Remember when people had diaries and got mad when someone read them... Now they put everything online and get mad when people don't.

One thing I did that really helped was that I screened my friends list. I filtered out every person I did not know personally. I have only one person on the list that I have never met face to face and that is a penpal I have corresponded with for 20 plus years. That has significantly reduced the triggering that I seemed to feel daily.

There remain two types of triggers for me. 1) Those individuals who insist on living their perfect lives out over social media. I propose that their lives aren't so perfect after all. 2) the shocking posts of hatred and political extremism. I delete them too.

There is no rule you must stay friends with those who set you off.

How can anyone possibly keep up?
One of my nieces has shut down her FB acct because it took too much time out of her life. People don't properly extend invites anymore, they post on FB... and then get angry if everyone did not read it.

When I am hypo-manic or full blown manic, I use social media as if I am a celebrity and every one should know whats going on in my mind. I start tweeting every little thought that may make people laugh or may make someone angry.

Usually, when more manic, i start to feel the euphoria and it is such a high that i subconsciously begin expressing how great i feel and how great my life is on Twitter and facebook.

I have lost alot of "fans" and friends but I have gained alot as well. Sometimes the people i want following me, follow me for the wrong reasons and I've developed a fan based with in the gay community of Chicago of people that may not truly know the real me.

They may only look at me as the fun partying socialite that I am truly not.

Half of my social media is in ukrainian and it is embroidery and war, flower headpieces and war, dark humor and war, and sometimes just plain war news.

So yes, social media makes me depressed but not because of somebody i havent seen in ages going to party or because they have a big house.

Sometimes shallow fluff annoys me, but i try to remember that normal life with its joys is what people fight for...

I am not jealous, i built my own life, even if it includes war news.

Social media to me is a weapon, so i dont really post anything too personal.

I found it more of a trigger for mania--that's when I would post a lot and then cringe when I look back on it.

I don't take social media seriously at any time. It's not healthy. Seems anyone with modem connection thinks his opinion is the ONLY one...

One of my big issues with social media these days is all the political crap that goes on. It can set me off on a tirade.

I filter most of the political stuff. I hide it or say I don't want to see this. Much easier on my sanity that way. My friends sometimes post some real tearjerker stories and I have to be careful with those.

The thing with politics on social media is... it allows for normal people to have impact, if they are resourceful enough.

But also as weapon in hybrid war. Trust me 80% of the anti-refugee propaganda, homophobic crap (especially if it includes words such as GAYROPE), anything with absurd, absurd claims... that comes straight from Kremlin. And if it includes the f-word (not that... I mean "fascist), you can be sure whom are you dealing with.

I learned to laugh at that after being called "Judeofascist". Though I am sorta jealous of my friend who got called "Jewish Muslim", because... that is t-shirt worhy.

I use social media and have a click of international friends on my FB friend list. That said I don't mind people posting positive things, but when I'm depressed all political extremism is very triggering, I try to hide those posts and I've even unfriended people over.extreme posts. But I also don't post much when depressed.either (not like when I'm hypomanic where I post a lot and PM people.a lot too). Even my IG account hasn't been touched in over a month. And I don't even use Twitter anymore.

I don't even know how to use Facebook or twitter or any of that stuff. I just recently mastered pinterest lmao. I don't know anyone on there except my own kids so its kind of pointless for me to join that kind of stuff. Now though after reading this stuff I am kinda glad that I am facebook ignorant. Sounds like nothing but trouble. If I ever feel like contacting the kids I just text them. Don't need facebook for that plus I wouldn't even know how to use it anyway.

Anything filled with hate from both sides of the isle, calling for death of innocent people, just unnecessary hate really, that's what's extreme to me. This is just my personal opinion...
