Hey guys, I only got one response in the Psychotherapy forum so thought I would post it here too...

I have been doing a CBT 10 week course ran by a Clinical Psychologist. I am possibly being offered therapy..... I'm a bit of a geek and am the only one in my class doing any of the homework. In my eyes I want to get better and not feel so crap.

I'm going to talk to her next week but what are your experiences with Psychology and CBT. It's all new to me I have only been learning for 6 weeks

It's certainly hard work though and has brought up a lot from my past

I've found you get what you put into it, so keep working hard on your homework.

Finding the right therapist was one of the best things I ever did for myself. And one of the hardest.

I work in mental health (I'm a psych nurse) so searching elsewhere for help with my own problems was hard for me. Pride. You know. I went through a few therapists before I found one I actually felt comfortable with and thought would really helpme. It's been such a good thing. She's really helping me work through my issues, and she's able to hear what I've said and paraphrase it into something really simple and obvious that I just never realized before! It's been so, so good for me.

I highly recommend therapy. I just encourage you to find someone you like and trust. Not everybody "clicks" with every therapist... if you're just not feeling someone, ask for a referral. The right one for you is out there.

I'm in the UK too I have had therapy...... like you, I would have done the homework, but the therapist did not give me any... He worked with Freudian transference based therapy.

Personally, I do not feel it's as simplistic as getting out of it what you put into it.... I agree with the others who said that a good fit is crucial. A good therapist, a good fit, can do immense good... The reverse, can certainly do harm.

Go with your gut, and research as much as you can. Keep posting, we're rooting for you

I had to stop CBT becase it wasn't the right type of therapy i need right now.

Im still going thru med changes, and the CBT was too emotionally tolling on me. I switched to DBT, which is what I need right now. Not forever.

CBT helped in one way, schedule, schedule, schedule! Lol. I'm adhd, along with other dx, so learning schedule and reward has gotten me out of bed when i didnt want to.
Thanks for this!

I spoke to the Clinical Psychologist today and I'm going ahead with the therapy. I need to see my Nurse in 2 weeks time to discuss with him my options. So nothing will be happening over night :-)
