Good morning

I'm heading into town today and want to pick up some magnesium and fish oils and don't know what else really.

What would you consider to be the most helpful supplements for someone like me or any mental illness for that matter. Also state doses if possible

Try some vitamin D. It's good for depression and most people are vitamin D deficient anyways.

I take 2000 IU, as recommended by my nutritionist and GP.

I've heard of someone on here using bee pollen for hypo. Look at your local GNC or health store.

I take a high potency Omega-3 fish oil and also a vitamin B complex. Both are supposed to be good for your brain and your mood. (Don't know if they really work but they can't hurt!)

I also strongly recommend the Vit. D3 - I take it every single day. I actually take 5,000 IU, but I'm no doctor. I can't remember where I was reading that was a reasonable dose (it's been over a year). I had bloodwork done about 6 months ago, and my levels were in the low side of normal.

I can tell a difference in my mood when I don't take it for several days.

Before taking vitamin d you need a blood test because it is one of the few vitamins your body stores and if you take it when you don't need it your body will have too much which can cause a variety of problems. Many people are deficient but if you aren't then you could have other problems from it if you supplement it.

As mentioned above, it's important to have a blood test, measuring your Vitamin D level. I have one at least twice per year. I adjust my Vit. D intake accordingly.

I've read newer articles about using NAC which is an amino acid and that it helps with regulating mood and depression.
I"m not so sure about Folic Acid, although there is a prescription form of it called Deplin that is supposed to help antidepressants work better (well, makes the brain work better)...so if you don't need the methylated form of folic acid, perhaps the regular kind would be helpful. Look up dr google and see how these supplements may help.

I take both, plus fish oil, D3 and a high potency multivitamin. in addition to my regular meds.

I think it is important to have regular blood-tests done in order to pin-point exactly what vitamins/minerals you need to get more of. If not, you could end up taking supplements that your body does not really need. Since supplements are expensive, that would be a huge waste of money. The cost of having blood-tests probably would equal the amount that one migth be spending on supplements one does not really need. I find that it is a lot of hype out there about what supplements to take for this and for that, and it can get really confusing! After I had blood-tests done, it was discovered that I was very low on vit B12, as iron as well. My doctor advised me to take iron-supplements (and what dose), and I also got weekly injections of vitB12. It helped me a lot in terms of lessening symtoms of long and debilitating periodes of depression (which is my major BP-symptom).
I also think it is important to eat a diet that contains high amounts of the vitamins I typically am low on. I searched the internet to find out, and came up with a long list of foods high in vit B12, iron and vit D. I chose to eat more of those, after having determined which ones I liked. And I am a firm believer in taking vit D-supplements. I hope this was helpful! It`s a jungle out there of good and less good advice about these things!

Wow thanks for all the replys everyone. I definitely need vit. D3 as do most people living in Ireland what with the lack of sunlight especially in the winter months as this is when I become most depressed. I love the cold weather I just hate the short days.

I went and got a few bits and this is what I'm taking 2x per day. It may seem exessive but I always take a bit more than the stated dose(of supplements)and alcohol and cocaine for a period.

Magnesium 500mg
Omega 369 2000mg
Vit.c 2000mg
B-complex 1 tab
Multivitamin 1 tab
Vit.d3 4400iu

Again it might seem excessive but it hardly gonna kill me.

Looks like a good plan I take those too , I do take a prenatal vitamin instead of a multi vitamin, I just feel better on it. I also take Garlic and coral calcium and CQ10 for my fibro pain .

All looks good to me, except you really don't need the Omega 3-6-9 formula. Almost everybody gets WAY more than enough Omega 6's and 9's from our diet (too much actually) and generally all we're lacking in is Omega 3's.
