I'm looking for advice...
This guy at work is a total asshole and he is super triggering. Normally I would ignore him, EXCEPT he is my mentor. That means I can't ignore him. The best thing for me to do is ask for a new mentor, but I don't know the most professional way to do it. If you're wondering why I hate him, it's because he's totally useless and a liar. Every time I ask for help, he's like, "go google it". The problem is, how the hell can I google something if I don't know what to google for...? And besides, he's my mentor; he's supposed to help me with things instead of telling me off. My boss says he's supposed to help teach me how to use different software. I mean, why should I spend 3 days following a tutorial online when he can help teach me in 1 hour? And of course he told my boss "she doesn't seek help unless she's stuck".., which is a total lie. I always seek help and he literally doesn't help. I'm not going to say any of that to my boss, but I'm just letting you guys know why I don't like him. So how do I professionally tell my boss I don't want to work wth this guy anymore? |

It seems you don't have much choice except to tell your boss the truth
and tell him that is why you don't want to work with this guy. Don't talk as if you are whining about it, talk with some confidence and let your boss know that you are there to learn and to do a good job but you believe this guy is preventing that from happening. I don't know if there is much else you can do and who knows maybe your boss has had these issues with this guy in the past, it may surprise you. What ever you choose to do I wish lots of luck and I hope it all goes well.

Let your boss know exactly what's happening. I would explain it just as you have here. Let your boss know that when you ask for help you are dismissed and told to find the information yourself. I would tell your boss that you care about efficiency and find the current mentor reduces your efficiency via their methods. Explain you do not learn best in the environment you are currently in and since you wish to work at your fullest potential within the company, you wish to have a new mentor to facilitate this. Good luck.

I'm in agreement with what most everyone has said and that is to tell your boss. I can't really see any other option. Your boss is the only one that can change the situation and hopefully find you a better mentor. Sorry you're dealing with this. Hugs.

I agree with everyone but Fishin Fool said it best. Do not sound like your there to whine.....talk with confidence......state your there to learn.

I would tell your boss in a professional manner what has been happening. State that you're not learning effectively from your mentor despite reaching out to him frequently and you're concerned about your job performance being affected. Your boss will see that you're proactive and care about your work.

I can only offer advice based on past experience. Definitely tell HR about it would be my advice before the situation gets out of control. If HR brushes you off, then it is probably time to start looking for another job. The most important rule when talking to HR is to try and sound as professional as possible when addressing your concerns.

Keep a record of when you are reaching out and what happens. If you can give specifics in a discussion with your boss it will be professional as he will see the specifics of the situation.

I concur with most opinions - go talk to your boss.......don't get set up for failure. There's nothing worse in an office than the lazy-sack-of-**** loudmouth who spends most of the day covering his ***. Even talking about it is a trigger for me.
And BTR makes a good point.....start writing this stuff down with dates and times but do it discreetly. |
