Is it short term or long term? How did you get to the point that you feel like you needed to be on it? We're you working prior to going on it?
I ask so many questions because I really feel like I cannot work now. My productivity since September has declined and I'm frustrated with my job. But I work for a great company and would hate to leave. I'm just in a state of limbo and don't know what to do. I put in the paperwork to get the ball rolling on getting short term disability through my employer for the time being. I'm currently covered through FMLA, but I'm running out of vacation time, especially since I've been off since Tuesday, and I need actual income since FMLA is unpaid. I live alone, I need income. |

I've been on Ssdi since 2013. I wanted it to be short term bc I am young.
I am currently looking at training to go back to work. My t wants me to remain on Ssdi for now and work part time so I don't overdo it and can master the skills first.

Hi Gina. I'm sorry things are so bad for you right now and very sorry to hear you are in a position where you must consider SSDI.
My situation is probably a little unique but hopefully my experience will be helpful for you. I worked for my employer for about 11 years before I had to go out on disability. My son has a very serious health condition and was in and out of the hospital. I've always been sickly but until my son was spending weeks and months in the hospital I never missed work. I got FMLA for the time I spent with my son in the hospital. It's been a long time now but I'm pretty sure I got paid for this through short term disability. I think there was a waiting period of about a week which was unpaid but short term disability would kick in after that and I was compensated. As time went on I became increasing sick with IBS and other painful symptoms. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was missing more and more work which upset my co-workers and a hostile work environment resulted. I was a wreck emotionally and physically. I felt guilty for missing work but was too sick so didn't know what to do. My husbands confided to his best friend at work what was happening to me. His best friend used to work for Social Security disability processing claims and he told my husband I should apply as I certainly qualified. I told my husband there was NO WAY I would be approved as I had witnessed people being turned down for what I thought was a more legitimate reason than mine. I became increasingly sicker mentally and physically .....kept missing work and getting snide remarks from co-workers....I was in a living hell and on auto pilot. I fell into what I can only describe as a comotose type depression and my husband took it upon himself to file for SSDI for me online. His co-worker assured him I do qualify....he said that if you cannot work a 40 hour week and support yourself financially due to a medical condition, then you qualify and to get a lawyer if I'm not approved. To make a long story short, I was approved for disability about 8 months after my husband filed for it....which was a good thing since I was fired from my job about a month prior. My advise is to keep your job if at all possible....but if you cannot, then please remind yourself that you paid into an insurance program and unfortunately need to collect. It's your money so don't feel guilty for needing it. It can be a life saver. I hope I was able to answer some of your questions. I know how terrifying it is to be in this situation and my heart goes out to you. (((Hugs))) |

Hi Elsa
This does help and thank you for sharing. I think I just put too much pressure on myself to be strong and not take the help I really do need. I'm hoping short term disability will help since that is available to me. I will end up with a few days of unpaid days, but I guess that is the sacrifice I have to make to get the help I need. It's just a weird state to be in. |

I'm new to forum so don't know if this will even post. Tried a quick reply yesterday and don't where it posted. Anyway, I am on long term social security disability. I had been hospitalized several times and am bipolar 1, with treatment resistant depression and anxiety. I was working but because of stress and inability to function I had to stop. You have to be out if work for 5 or 6 months. I don't remember if I filed before or at the time to be out of work. Tons if medical documents for the past 12 years was submitted. Because of 12 years history I was approved in 6 weeks. I hope this helps and I hope the response finds its way to you.

I've been on ssdi since 2006. I've only recently stabilized enough mentally and medically to go back to work and I'm only doing so part time. I want to keep ssdi because I don't think I could manage full time work long term and be consistent plus the benefit of health insurance through medicare is worth a lot to me.

I'm on SSDI long term. My disability from work is also long-term. Even if I magically became well I would have to go back to college and learn new skills for a job. I can't do my old job because I would need a new security clearance. I'm 51 and I don't know how long I could work for anyone. So I consider myself retired and this is where I'm at.

In the UK its different and its different all through the UK I am guessing too...
I went on disability DLA (Disability Living Allowance) in 2011 after being sacked from my job on ill health grounds. It's due for renewal in 2017. You get 6 years then you are reviewed. I am also on ESA (Employment Support Allowance) which means I am in the Supported Group which means I DO NOT need to look for work as I am deemed "too ill" to work. However I am massively well now. It has took me 4 and a half years to get to that point. We now have the PIP system coming in (Personal Independant Plan) which will replace the DLA (Disability Living Allowance). So far people who get DLA some have had to fight to keep their allowances :-( I am dreading next year as I can't afford to live off of fresh air. I have been applying for jobs even though I am not meant to but I want to work. I am prepared to do anything to work. I was working for 10 years prior to becoming on benefits as they are known in the UK |
