I noticed some people prefer to listen to sad or angry songs when you can relate to those emotions at the time. Others prefer happy, uplifting music at times during phases of depression and irritability.

-What's your favorite genre/type of music you like to listen to when depressed?
-What genre do you prefer when in a happy or even euphoric mood?
-Any particular artists you listen to when depressed? How about when elated?
-Any songs that mean the most to you?

I tend to channel my anger into songs that reflect my mood...same with depression, although some therapists do not recommend this. I do try to be careful if something might trigger me further while in a deep depression, but some songs of that nature can be oddly comforting. Upbeat music I will turn to when I'm elated. I like music I can relate to. All genres are good. I like a lot of metal, classic rock/alternative(which are favorites).... some Motown, classic pop on occasion, a little (usually older) hip hop and R&B, old-school Goth....I'm quite versatile. Usually I go with darker stuff when depressed and more upbeat stuff when in a better mood, but I mix it up quite a bit.

Sometimes, I try to balance out my mood with a song from the other side. So, if I wake up and I'm feeling agitated and what I suppose might be hypomanic, I'll try to simmer down with my music. I like Joy Division and New Order to mellow out, sometimes the Psychedelic Furs, too.

When I want to space out and just let my mind wander, its Tori Amos (almost always From the Choirgirl Hotel). When I need a boost, I take it back to the early-to-mid 60s with The Sonics.

At night, its M83 and My Bloody Valentine, to ease me off to sleep.

Interesting question, btw.

When I'm depressed, I don't really listen to music, but if I do, I listen to angry music.. We're talking metal, like Disturbed, System of a Down, Breaking Benjamin. For example,

When I'm happy/euphoric, I listen to the polar opposite (no pun intended). Basically, calm indie stuff like MGMT, Bon Iver, Walk The Moon, etc. For example,

Otherwise, 80s music.. Aerosmith, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, etc.

I play the same playlist so whatever is playing is fine. I don't listen to much of anything when I'm depressed. I listen to all kinds of stuff.

Music can be helpful in getting me into a better mood.
I enjoy quite a range of music. Very eclectic.

When I'm depressed I can't even get myself to cram earbuds in my ear. Making a decision of what music to listen to is too much for to handle.

When depressed I don't really listen to music. When I'm manic I start listening to fast, sometimes angry music like The Clash, Rammstein, or Prodigy.

Sometimes when I'm depressed, especially to a certain degree, I also can relate to not putting any music on. I just lack motivation completely. I am feeling this way lately.

Listening to while hypo-manic is orgasmic to say the less. Everything has significant meaning that applies to you. I the words almost flow through your body. It is intense...

Music has a powerful effect on me. I told a therapist about 16 years ago that music has a very severe effect on my mood and has the ability to heighten my moods in negative ways. It also has the ability to effect me positively. I listen to all types of music in all types of moods. When severely depressed I don't do anything, including listening to music.

According to a DBT reading I once had, one is supposed to listen to upbeat music when down & soothing music when anxious or speeding. I try to heed this advice & it sometimes works; unfortunately, however, I don't often heed the advice.

When I really want to wallow in it? The saddest song of ALL time: Albinoni's "Adagio in G minor."

When I have a desire to fuel that "need for speed?" The Exploited's "Chaos is my Life."

Favorite genre & song? Bebop...Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight."

Yeah.... Another sign of my hypomania. I actually tear up (in an elated/good way) and get the shivers when I hear an extraordinary track of music. I also get obsessed and play the same song over and over again. I look up the lyrics and try to memorize. I miss that.. right now music is like ashes.
