Well... after an attempt at Lamictal monotherapy and then rotgut suicidal depression.. time for something new. I've rejected and continue to reject Abilify.. but I've managed to get my pdoc to TRY Wellbutrin. I've had mixed episodes that led to the hospital and a house full of broken glass when trying Zoloft.... so she was tentative about trying another anti-depressant. However... I had no idea what was going on then AND Lamictal seems to really tame my agitation and tendency to fire up. So... I THINK I can recognize problems with the Wellbutrin based soley on my level of agitation and response to stress which has really stabilized since being on Lamictal. The depression sucks though. That will kill me if it keeps up. She seemed to lean more towards Latuda.. but I really wanted to try something that is weight-neutral and minimal side-effects.. as well as a tendency to shoot more for the high end of things.

So... What have been other people's experiences with bipolar depression and Wellbutrin?

I love wellbutrin. It is the only thing that manages my near constant low grade depression. The only issue I have had is potential high blood pressure from it. Working on resolving that now so i can hopefully keep taking it.

Wellbutrin is definitely a decent AD, and will push you toward the "up" end of the spectrum. I had the best experience with the XL formulation; if you can get it. Also, I tried the generic forms and they didn't work for me at all. So my recommendation would be to go for the brand Wellbutrin XL.

Regarding Latuda, for me it's been weight neutral with next to no side effects. I wouldn't be afraid to try it if I were you. It won't give you the high that Wellbutrin will, however.

Good luck in your quest.

I have tried Wellbutrin a while ago and liked it. No negative side effects and it worked for my depression.

Thank you folks. Useful info. I wish I would have known about the generic versus the real deal. I was just prescribed this morning and I have no idea what type. And good to know on Latuda. If I start misbehaving soon.. then that will be the back up plan.

Oh great... It seems like this year my blood pressure has started getting higher. I will be seeing my regular doctor soon to discuss.

Wellbutrin is not my friend. I have found it destabilizing. Specifically it makes me agitated, ill-tempered, and hypomanic.

Having said that, meds work differently for each individual so I hope Wellbutrin works for you.

SSRI antidepressants send me straight into irritated, raging mania. I absolutely cannot take anything like zoloft. Wellbutrin is one of the only antidepressants I can take that actually works great and I can take it without triggering those manic episodes. I've been on Wellbutrin XL for years, on varying dosages. I take it in combination with Latuda and have had no weight gain. I hope it works out for you!

I love my Welbutrin. My other meds had left me in a mental fog, and still with lingering low grade depression. Welbutrin cleared that right up.

I've been on Wellbutrin for a few months now and it has helped to some degree. My pdoc just increased my dose so I'm hoping that it will make more of a positive difference in my mood because I'll be damned if I'm going back to the hospital again for feeling suicidal.

I really like wellbutrin. I just feel me on it. I didn't know I felt undone until I started taking this and felt better.

I don't see Wellbutrin working for me. I take 300mg in the morning and it's a little boost. Less than Red Bull.
Now, my temper has rocketed exponentially. Not good. Maybe I'll file for divorce.
Also take Abilify. 5mg, soon to be 10 maybe. You need a stabilizer for that. Like Lamotrigine.
Abilify is helping me more. Good luck.

Wellbutrin made me angry and psychotic. I'll never touch it again.
