I've been looking into different symbols and their meanings. I have tons of tats already. Pink Floyd lyrics covering my back for my mom that past, a fav bands symbol on my wrist, a skeleton key with flowers on my other wrist to cover an obvious scar. Tons of different size starts and decor covering my shoulder/upper arm and I want something that represents my life struggles. What's a good idea to symbolize MI? If anyone has one or any tat for anything then feel free to post a pic!

I'm tattoo dreaming what I can't afford so pics are welcome.

I've always thought the comedy + tragedy masks are a great symbol of bipolar.

That's a very good idea! Maybe give them some personal touch somehow too and add a little ribbon for MI

I posted this on another thread here and that's why I wanted to start this thread. This is a skeleton key covering my SI scar. Skeleton keys open more than one door. And by covering the scar I'm closing that door and opening many more doors to life (haven't opened any good so far though lol) What's a good tattoo idea to represent BP?

You were able to tattoo over your scar? I am very interested in tattooing my forearms to cover the scars and prevent me from cutting myself there anymore. I'm just worried they won't be able to do it because my scarring is so extensive. But the scars are all smooth and soft. No keloids or raised or red skin. So hopefully they'll be able to do it. I'm going to get peace tattooed on one arm and hope tattooed on the other, hopefully with flowers.

I like the comedy/tragedy masks idea. Also a yin yang like Venus suggested. I think anything to show opposite extremes would be good.

Rx this is slightly off topic but about me. I had hit rock bottom few years ago and have been doing better now. I'm thinking of getting a tattoo like the Phoenix rising but instead of the bird, the hulk. My favorite comic book character and symbol of strength resilience and durability which I think I have shown. What do you think? I need to find someone to draw it.

And to answer your original question. The hulk. Opposite Polars. Goes from geeky science guy to mad driven raged monster.

I have a good number of cutting and scars that have been successfully tattooed over. It hurts more, but a skilled tattooer will be able to take care of you. This is coming from someone with raised and thick scars as well as faint ones. Both look awesome tattooed now. The thick raised scars hurt like a m€~%|>{>,%\€|er to tattoo, but Its worth it. Also having my tattoos absolutely keeps me from cutting. Whenever I'm tempted, I just think of the time and energy that went into the beautiful artwork. As well as the catharsis of getting them put on. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I once saw a butterfly tattoo for bipolar.
One wing was colorful and beautiful and
the other wing was black. It was pretty cool.
If you google bipolar tattoos you'll be surprised
how much come up.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I'm going to start asking my friends for artist recommendations.

I have this image in my head of an outline of a bird with it's black shadow underneath, maybe their tails touching.

I was IP with someone who had sleeves to cover scars. It worked really well for him (except that he had a new cut that was apparently pretty deep). He showed some people and the scars were really hard to make out under the tattoos. I didn't get to hear more b/c he took an instant dislike to me and ignored my existence for the 24 hours our stays overlapped. But I know he shared about that a lot unless you were me.

First I made sure my artist was already experienced in covering scars. And even though I already knew him, I was so embarrassed to show him mine and tell him about it. The scar was a type of keloid and raised mostly because I messed with it a lot. I kept reopening it in hopes it would heal flat. All I did was mess it up more. But with the right blending and color it came out perfect. It goes down the whole length of the key. I did go back for a touch up about a montht later.

I have been wanting the Phoenix for a very long time now! I just don't have the money or know where on my body to put it. My back is ready covered. But if I can find a way to add the Phoenix to my shoulder tat that would be awesome. What's a good tattoo idea to represent BP?

For MI in general I've always liked the phoenix. It symbolizes transformation, rising from the ashes of who you used to be, and becoming something beautiful. I plan to get one someday. For me there's the added bonus of it being an alternate symbol of Scorpio. Hence my username and display pic.

Kanji tattoos are probably cliche, but the Japanese for "manic depression" is 3 cool kanji, pronounced sōutsubyō:
躁鬱病
