Does anyone here subscribe to a low carb or keto way of eating? I started this five weeks ago for overall health benefits. But last week I was hypomanic during PMS and then I got my period Sunday and it has been downhill since then. Today I am experiencing derealization, waves of depression and anxiety and I'm exhausted. I'm not sure if it's an emotional reaction to quitting sugar (I dream about desserts every night...lol) or nutrient deficiency (magnesium, omega 3s), or if the diet has messed with my hormonal balances and now my med doses are off.

My pdoc says she doesn't think it's the diet, but I'm not so sure, because I was well controlled on my meds before I started it. Does anyone have any experience on a low carb diet and was it positive or negative? I really don't want to give up on it because I feel so much healthier physically.

I'd guess your issues have more to do with the hormonal shifts of PMS/menses than diet.

I have done a strict ketogenic diet. It did not impact my mood. It made me very tired at first and then ok.
I am doing low carb now and do not notice food-related mood changes.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for this!

I've been doing low carb off and on since January. I haven't noticed any mood changes. But I'm not being very strict with it.

I think it could be hormonal. I freaked out the first time that happened to me. But then I saw the pattern. That week I get it...I'm depressed and exhausted. Then I'm fine the next week. It wasn't always like that for me. This started happening within the past year or so.

I was much more level on the low-carb diet. It stabilizes your blood sugars and regulates your hormones, I believe.

I'm sorry you're feeling so icky! Hormones can make you nuts. Can you get some exercise and see if that helps?

how are you doing the diet
I remember when I was a teen I would do Atkins diet and eat nothing but meat and cheese lol. I lost weight fast but felt depressed with no energy. now do more "clean eating" and stay away from bad carbs but eat fruit and veggies and beans which all have carbs. you also have to drink a ton of wAter I noticed
but like Christina said I feel better without all the bad carbs

Thank you everyone for your support. From what I'm hearing from you, sounds like the new hormonal fluctuation of my period may be the main culprit. Before I went on BP meds, I used to have similar cyclical experiences, (I also have PCOS but the psych meds kept those symptoms in check), but it wasn't nearly as drastic as this cycle.

I have been following keto very strictly to the letter. Most of my carbs come from keto approved vegetables.

I'll see if the next cycle is any better and at least try to ride the waves instead of fist fighting them.
