Hi everyone,
Thank you in advance for your help. I was recently (about a month ago) diagnosed with bipolar. I've been working with my therapist and my family doctor to play, what I call, medication bingo. My family is very conservative and does not discuss mental health much. My mother knows about my diagnosis, but that's about it. My mother suffers from crippling anxiety, so I don't tell her about all of the things that happen with my mental health because she will not sleep and becomes invasive trying to 'help.' She ended up in the hospital a few years back and when she came home she told me I was part of the reason she ended up in the hospital. To my question: I've been very depressed the last few days and have been getting suicidal thoughts. If it doesn't get better soon I'm going to go to the hospital, but I don't know how to do that without telling my mom why I'm going to the hospital. She's going to ask why I'm at the hospital, unless I lie and tell her I'm staying at a friends place. But if I do that and end up staying longer than 72 hours she'll know. I don't want to tell her about the suicidal thoughts and cause her anxiety to spiral out of control. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I live in Canada, in case it matters |

If you're having suicidal thoughts and you think you need hospital, you should go regardless of your mom. Maybe you can tell her you need a med adjustment?

I also noticed you said family doctor is treating you. A psychiatrist is much better suited to the meds that you need to treat the bipolar.

My husband told his family I was out of town with my family. With my family he answered texts like me. Told them I'd call, I was at the store, sleeping or showering. I've got away with a 4 day stay and a 10 day stay like that. Do you have anyone that can buffer your texts? Call them right before you go in that will give you some buffer time.

My parents do not know about my diagnosis. I had my first hospital stay last August for 8 days. My parents never knew. My husband answered any texts that I received from my mom.

Yes....I had a DO doc treat me when I first had symptoms. He misdiagnosed me with major depression and put me on the wrong med (antidepressant). It put me in full blown mania because I actually have bipolar 1. Afterward I went to a psychiatrist that specialized in mental health

I'm sorry you're having a tough time. I hope you feel better soon and don't have to go IP. Franz had some good advice if you have to go IP - med adjustment. Good luck and best wishes.

I've done this before.
It will be nice for the doctors and your family to both meet, so the doctors can calmly explain your symptoms if you don't want to. You can tell the doctors exactly what to say, and they will do so as long as it is honest. Try it out. |

I luv how you call it , medicine bingo', because it's true! It is trial and error at first to find the right med combo, and I say hang in there and keep taking your meds and seeing your treatment team. It seems once we hit our working doses....things got better and bad thoughts went away.
As far as mom goes....would you think not knowing what is going on may cause more anxiety? I would think so. I'd tell her why but reassure her that it's going to be all right. How do you explain disappearing fir 2 weeks under commitment for sui watch? At least that's what I went through. Better to call a crisis center/team about these thoughts and they then can guide you to proper treatment approach. Until then...I practice distraction where I if I find myself in that frame of mind...I go out for acwalk to breathe fresh air. I find nature very soothing...in the city, too. I just watch the bird and squierrks, flowers... Hang in ther! ![]() |

I'd go with meds adjustment. They actually told me, when I went in for mania to a locked ward (I think those were the only beds available) that I was in just for "medicine adjustment".

went from depression treated with quickly increasing doseage of lexapro leading to involuntary ip ... hoped to go home before family returned from visiting family ... not so lucky ... I would not give permission to contact them ... so they refused to release me until I did ... made entire immediate family to come and be "informed" about me and promise to follow a list they wrote up to keep me safe ... but I guess it has worked out alright ... sometimes you just have to do what you need and just accept what happens ...
