For those of you that have this condition, what is it like?

I think I have begun hearing voices at the age or 47 but I'm unsure...is it possible to have this begin at my age? It isn't really disturbing right now, but I'm afraid of it getting worse...does it get worse or does it stay the same over the years? I don't hear them all the time, but on a daily basis, at times throughout the day, and only when I'm alone. Is this normal?

I don't usually speak to this topic anymore but since I posted on another thread I thought I'd share my experience. I am 33. A couple of years ago, I started hearing women's voices through my headphones. I can't remember what was said, but it was clear. I took my headphones downstairs and asked my husband after describing the voices if I had picked up another frequency or something but he said no. I was afraid of my headphones for a while because it seemed as though it was happening every time I was on them. After long however, it was happening through speaker systems. It was so bad that I could hear music and fuzziness through speakers. It was scary and sometimes I couldn't tell if it was real or not real. Eventually, it went away. So, for me, this happened later in life and went away. I hope that helps you some.

It is possible it could get worse. This sort of the thing is more likely to start happening in a person's 20s. I would say it's not normal.

I started hearing voices in my 20s. Most of them sounded like myself thinking, like as if I would think a thought to myself in words, only I was hearing voices doing this on their own. A few of them sounded external, like I was hearing something else outside myself. It was not too intense and it came and went over a period of months until stopping. When I was in my teens, sometimes when trying to sleep I would hear faint chatter as if a TV was on in the house.

Please have a physical from your doctor. See a neurologist perhaps. It's more common to begin early but stress has caused me to have symptoms beyond my wildest dreams so it's possible. And cash speaks from experience of having this happen in her 30's. I misinterpret things people say...mumbling in the background becomes an attack, but to my knowledge I have not heard voices that are not there. I had another scary symptom happen recently which terrorized me. I used to love hearing the birds singing in the morning but when I had a break recently the birds were harassing and mocking me. How silly of a thing to think right? But it was real and horrifying...I had to walk around with earplugs in. Sirens would blare and I was sure it was all part of a plot to drive me mad. I've never had this symptom before and I'm in my 40's! I do plan to have another brain scan though and I think you should too.

When things change from your usual it is good to get checked out. When I started having specific, intense visual hallucinations once my pdoc told me to go to the ER because she thought it was neurological. My lithium level was sky high and when they got it down the hallucinations went away. Thinking back I'd had symptoms of high lithium for weeks but hadn't really noticed until they were questioning me in the ER and I realized how often I was saying "no, well, yes.........".

I am under a lot of stress right now. There is a possibility that is causing this symptom. I have a physical in July. I just had my lithium level checked about two months ago and it was fine then, but of course it could have changed since then. I've been hearing voices for awhile now, but I just realized yesterday what the noise was inside my head.

Good luck getting this straightened out. I hope all goes well.
