I have been put on this combo, pretty much as a last resort. It stopped acute mania. The dr at IP say it would also work against the depressive phase, and esp. Depakote.

In the past Depakote caused significant weight gain. Now Seroquel is also a moderate weight-gainer, so I am very concerned.

What have your experiences been for those also on this combo?

My dosages are being worked out - probably 550 mg of Seroquel + 1000 mg of Depakote.

Thanks!

I gained weight when I was on seroquel. I've never taken depakote though.

That's not an extremely high dose of depakote and weight gain increases with dose with it. I've read that 1000 mg and below aren't associated with a lot of gain.

Depakote isn't good at controlling depression. Seroquel at that dose might be. I didn't gain weight on Depakote, but I certainly did on Seroquel.

Have never taking Depakote, but I took Seroquel and did gain weight pretty rapidly after a month on it.

I have never been on Depakote but have been on seroquel, and currently take 25mg of it before bed to help me sleep. From what I know, seroquel increases appetite and the desire for more unhealthy foods which can in turn cause weight gain. (If I am inaccurate on this someone can feel free to jump in!) I have been on seroquel on and off throughout the years and have never noticed any weight gain. If you keep your eating habits in check and exercise regularly, you shouldn't have a problem. If you do notice some weight gain, perhaps exercising more often/more intensely and re-evaluating your eating plan would help. Good luck!

I take 1000mg depakote and 300mg seroquel. They are very effective for me, and I have had no luck switching to something else. Seroquel makes me crave sweets a lot and depakote makes you retain water and gain weight, too. despite it, I choose to be sane. But, if it is at all possible to try something less likely to cause so much weight gain, like latuda or abilify or geodon, I would ask your doctor about those first.

I read Medline articles on Seroquel which say the same thing - the weight gain happens in the beginning of treatment. Sorry to hear this happened to you!
