I'm very sensitive to caffeine and sometimes I have hypomania moments and other times I feel fine if I only drink very very little of it. So I try not to try so much of coffee which doesn't do much good for me.
I won't end up crashing until a few days later and I'll feel depressed and start crying. Normally I'm very quiet and I only speak when people speak to me. When I drink coffee: I'm very talkative and I can't sit still and I want to get things done and I'll slip over my words even because I'm talking so fast. Many people have told me coffee doesn't cause hypomania or mania at all. Though I've noticed this behavior in me anytime I drink it. So I always make sure to pace myself when it comes to any caffeine which I think is good. Anyone else relate with this? |

No, I'm not sensitive to caffeine. Then again, I don't like soda, coffee, or tea, so I don't actually get caffeine unless I take a caffeine pill like I did in school 2 years ago.
It sounds like you're doing a good job of monitoring yourself, though. Do you need the extra caffeine? If you do, you can talk to your pdoc about it and maybe come up with a treatment plan |

Everyone's reaction to caffeine is different. I must have morning coffee or I'm useless and irritable. Am I addicted? Probably so, I don't care.
![]() What is important is how YOU react. If you feel uncomfortable, speedy or manic, then it's not good for you. Whether you feel manic or actually are manic from it is a moot point.

I drank 4 or 5 cups a day until recently. Since starting wellbutrin, it is partly because of its effect on habitual behavior and partly because of the stimulating effect but I am down to 2. A third cup will make me jittery and I don't really care about having another cup. My prior consumption wasn't just to wake up; I had a caffeine habit. Now I am considering switching to tea at the office and only having the single cup of coffee at home until the bag of French roast runs out (no one else drinks French roast at home).

Had to stop drinking coffee about 20 years ago. Gave me jitters, I'd feel wired and my heart would race and do weird flip flops. I just started drinking decaf about 4 years ago. I'm ok with that. I'm scared to try a regular cup.

I am physically sensitive to caffeine. Too much makes me shaky and upsets my stomach. I drink decaf coffee occassionally and decaf diet soda, although I'm trying to get myself off of diet soda completely.
I used to abuse caffeine pills in my teens to get that manic high, before I believed I had bipolar.

It helps me wake up in the morning...I'm a grouch without my morning coffee. I drink caffeine through out the day and it has never bothered me. If I'm having anxiety I have to stay away from energy drinks but other than that I can drink as much as I want with no problems.

I'm very sensitive to it. For some reason, I can have a small amount in the morning in tea and am ok. If I have it later in the day or a large amount (equivalent to a cup of coffee), it messes me up. I get shaky and nervously talkative after drinking it and later it brings me down and I feel depressed.

I don't usually drink coffee and soda but had gotten in the habit of occasionally taking caffeine pills. Since I stopped at the request of my therapist I've noticed my anxiety and panic attacks going down to almost nothing.

I am very sensitive to caffeine. I remember drinking coffee to intentionally trigger hypomania in past years.

Another reason for me to avoid it. If I get hypomanic much, I am likely to lose the wellbutrin; I titrated to just below the level that triggers it and it has lifted me out of the funk. Yeah, it was kinda fun to discover how much triggered it as it was euphoric but there is no guarantee the next one will be euphoric and other people don't enjoy my company much when I am hypomanic. I am being straight up with pdoc.

I'm sensitive. I can feel abit manic if I've had too much. I drink a pretty weak instant coffee.
I was actually warned once not to mess with caffeine (or drugs) because I'm bipolar |

I haven't had caffeine (beyond the little bit in chocolate) in 10 years because I was using it as a drug to get manic. Once I stopped I realized how much I was using it to stay up and then when I got depressed I would drink a ton of it to try to go manic. It was bad for me and I just decided that was the end and it was. I do still miss cherry coke though.

Okay thank you for everyone's inputs. I guess it depends from person to person.
![]() Yeah I've took notice to it and I think I'll be careful when it comes to caffeine now and try not to think so much of it. Sometimes I try to wake myself by drinking coffee because there's times I'll wake up and feel very groggy. |
