Our cat Murphy is dying from liver failure right now. The vet gave him five to seven more days to live. He's only eight years old. He's seriously the best cat I've ever had. I love him so much it hurts. There's treatment we could get for him, but it's expensive and we can't afford it.

I was cool as a cucumber at the vet's office today. I even was okay when my husband went back to work. And I was okay when Murphy puked up the little amount of food I managed to get him to eat today (I just gave him a little more and he ate it. Hopefully he doesn't get sick again).

Now, however, I am panicking.

Seriously, I am having trouble breathing and my heart is racing, but I just took my night clonazepam, so hopefully I won't have a full on panic attack.

I'm already not doing well right now. I'm not depressed. I'm just off. I don't feel right. I've been having paranoia and other problems.

It just hit me that he's going to die! Him and I are buddies.

I'm so sorry. Both of my cats died a few weeks apart in the winter and it was horrible. I hate that anyone has to go through that.

Have you tried feeding baby food meats? That helped mine when they couldn't handle other foods.

The vet recommended we give him some prescription canned food. It's finally diced up chicken. The vet said, that if he won't eat willingly, we needed to syringe feed him it mixed with water, so he gets some fluids.

I don't think I could handle losing two pets only a few weeks apart.

Our other cat, Kitty (who is fourteen years old!) has a bad cold right now, and I'm worried now that she's going to get really sick and die too.

Sometimes the prescription food is really, really appealing to them. Mine hated it for no good reason (the one who we tried it with was persnickety ) but would eat the baby food. I've had luck syringing water and getting them to eat baby food, fish, rice or egg when syringing food was rejected.

Both of mine were old. One was 21 and the other 16. I was fortunate to have them so long and neither suffered even though Noah had a very rapidly progressing cancer and could have. Now I have 2 7 month old kittens who are delightful. They don't replace Anna and Noah but they do keep it lively around here.

I'm so sorry. This is such a hard thing - I lost a cat on June 1st so I know how difficult it is.

My 5 y/o cat is in the hospital right now with Fatty Liver Disease, so her liver was starting to fail too but we caught it early.

Take care of yourself and snuggle with your buddy!
Thanks for this!

I'm so sorry about your cat. I am a huge animal lover. My cat is my a psychiatric service animal. I can only imagine what you are going through right now. I honestly don't have the words.

This is a very hard and stressful time. Losing your buddy is very hard to do.
Be kind to your self, allow your self to cry. It is healing.

Yeah. He really seems to like the prescription food. I fed him again and he ate a little and hasn't puked it up, so that's good. I asked the vet if he was in any pain, and the vet said no, that he was just nauseous feeling. If he was in pain, we would have had him put to sleep. I'm happy he's not. I don't want him to die in some vet office, where he's freaking out. I want him to die at home, where he's comfortable and with his family. It just kills me we can't afford the treatment, but it involves him staying in the hospital and getting all these expensive procedures.

This just feels wrong. He's a young cat (well, young-ish). This shouldn't be happening.

I'm so glad he ate and that he is comfortable. I hope he stays comfortable at home. Both of mine let me know when it was time; unfortunately neither passed at home. I feel at peace with what did happen now but that is a very sad choice. I hope that your boy has a peaceful passing at home.

I've been down the "Did everything" route years ago and while I'm sure I would feel different if it worked honestly it was so much money and it just prolonged his suffering. That was a case of complicated liver failure and it is not a happy memory. Sometimes just letting go is kinder.

It's harder when they are younger. I lost a 6 year old a while back and it was a lot sadder than my old guys who had lived long lives.

Sorry about your kitty. :/ I lost my old guy a bit over a year ago, and my younger foundling who would beat up on him a bit when they weren't cuddling is at an acquaintance's house for over a year now because I couldn't take care of her. It is so sad to lose them. There are two young adult cats where I'm staying now, I've socialized them a great deal since they were kittens are they are pretty cool (though not very bright, especially one lol). But sometimes I think about the cats who spent so many years with me and it's tough. I hope things go as easy as possible.

I had a kitten I sprayed with flea spray and he was dying and I had a psychiatrist that told me I could take extra xanax because dealing with a death is very very hard and it would have cost me over 3000 to get Stuart help at the vet hospital. Luckily Stuart is still alive, even though they told me there was a 90% chance he would die within 48 hours. But when he was so sick I was a wreck. I know how it feels.
