I'm trying to determine if the amount of sleep indicates specific bipolar types so I'm opening a poll for you guys.

List your official diagnosis and the least amount of sleep prolonged that you have had and felt perfectly fine with.

Hit a new record last night of 4 hours of sleep with waking up throughout. Official diagnosis is bipolar 2 with psychotic features but my doctors may be leaning toward type 1 now...

your turn

When manic I sleep 3-5 hours per night. Depressed 14-17. Well about 8. My diagnosis is in my signature.

BP 1

I have a lifelong battle with insomnia. Regardless of where I am BP wise.

I have slept a total of 15 hours in a week.

I really don't think that sleep amounts help determine bipolar type. Ask your pdoc that question.

There are people without bipolar that do very well with little sleep. I've heard that Donald Trump is one, and there is next to no chance he's bipolar. Maybe some other illness, but not bipolar.

Anyway, when hypo I can get 4 to 5 hours or more depending on how much Seroquel XR I take. When manic I might get 2 hrs or none. Usually if manic, if I go a few days with almost no sleep I usually end up in the hospital.

I'm a big sleepy head. Even when I'm manic or mixed or however I get I still get three to four hours of sleep. Otherwise depressed or baseline I get 8 and am fine. Things get dicey if it's below five, when I'm depressed or baseline.

Oh, almost forgot, I'm diagnosed bipolar 1 with psychotic tendencies or schizoaffective disorder bipolar type, depending on the doctor.

Whether depressed or manic, sleep was an issue for me. I was known to go three days straight without sleep. I felt fine . . . until I wasn't fine.

I'm bipolar 2 with psychotic features. I need a LOT of sleep. When I'm hypomanic I can get by with about 6 hours, when I'm depressed I can sleep for about 12 and when I'm in between about 8-10.

idk. I'm at the point right now where I'm *lucky* if I get 5, as lately, it's been about 2-4.

No insomnia here. Just hypomanic, I think. Or manic. I don't know. I have BP 1, and like lolagrace, I've gone roughly 3 days without sleep before.

I have had sleepless nights, but those are rare. More common is as little as 3 hours, but 4 is the more common short night. Most nights I sleep 6. Since starting low dose saphris at night, I get 6 hours almost every night.

I sleep in shifts. I sleep for about 4 hrs. Then up for a while ,then usually another two hours.

My doctor recommends i get at least 5 hours at a time.

I'm currently dx'd type 1, and the least amount of sleep I've been able to get by on was about 2-3 hours a night, though I have been through periods of ~70 hours though I felt terrible during that time so it doesn't really count.

I`m bipolar 2. If I don`t take my bedtime meds I don`t sleep. When I take them I sleep pretty well.

I agree with Bird Dancer. Plus, I've always kind of resented labeling. I've accepted the fact I have bipolar, but it's no one elses' business, really. I take meds & carry on. This site is really the only place I share some of the my perspectives & experiences with BP.

I have bipolar 1 but am almost always able to sleep, even if it's only 3-4 hours, during my manic episodes. I have rarely stayed up as much as 36 hours but crashed and burned shortly thereafter. Depressed, I can sleep as much as 12-14 hours.

I'm type 1 and the longest I've gone without any sleep was 6 days. I was over the top manic.
