I was dignosed bipolar about 10 years ago. Last 5 I went unmedicated. I was just able to manage it. November last year I ended up in hospital for pneumonia. At this time I was dignosed with stage 2 emphysema. Since then my sleep hasn't been good, I'm up coughing a lot having problems breathing. My family doctor got me an ada for work but my job has found another way to get rid of me. The stress, anxiety and depression is almost too much. Not alone also dealing with this emphysema. I tried for social security 6 or 7 years ago for bipolar but was denied. So I just delt with it. Didn't goto doctors for it a year or 2 after. Well. My job is looking for a way to fire me. I got my own place I cannot afford to get fired. It's spiralling down hill with my health. Emphysema is my death sentence but only stage 2 no one will help me. Would I need upto date medical documents confirming my bipolar dignosed or the ones 5-6 years ok sufficient for filing SSDI. I'm thinking if one or the other won't get me approved and some help maybe both in combination would. I'm just lost right now I don't know where to turn. Thank you in advance.

I'm sorry you are going through all this. That's a lot to handle. I don't have any experience with this, but I do hope for the best for you.

It's best to see a dr. and a therapist so that your doing the things you can but even that is not enough to keep a job.

I would include both diagnoses, as they both play a part.
Updated records are helpful to your claim, yet use whatever is available.
Get the claim filed, as the filing date is important. Should your claim be approved, the approval is retroactive to the filing date. (The same goes for associated "waiting periods," like the waiting period for Medicare coverage is retroactive to the filing date.)

If you are unable to file your claim and/or need assistance, there are attorneys specializing in this.

I think there is another forum here which deals with SSDI more specifically. You might find some helpful info. there as well.

I am sorry you are going through so much.

Hello Obiron: Unfortunately I don't know a lot about SSDI applications. However it has always been my impression that initial applications are pretty-much routinely denied. One then has to appeal, preferably with the help of an experienced attorney, in order to have a chance at being approved.

Anyway... I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit. May I suggest you introduce yourself over on PC's New Member Introductions forum? Here's a link:

There's a lot of support that can be available here on PC. The more you post, & reply to other members' posts, the more a part of the community you will become. Plus there are the chat rooms where you'll be able to interact with other PC members in real time (once your first 5 posts have been reviewed & approved.) So please keep posting!

Yea, I feel like I'm in a tough situation. Regardless I did put myself in this situation. I wish I could have seen further ahead. We all make decisions based on the info in front of us. I just didn't make the right one or I would have been better prepared for this. I got for another lung function test in a few weeks then the doctor after that. I'll see what my emphysema status is like. Then I'll get back into mental health clinic to try to pick up where I left off. Nothing here is going to be a quick fix I guess.
