I've read a few articles and seen a few things that suggest Bipolar and Depression can be linked to inflammation.

I recently had blood work done because my doctor wanted to check for autoimmune problems and my ANA and titer were positive. Generally, most of the time I am tired and achy. Autoimmune disorders can definitely cause inflammation.

How many others here have co-occuring inflammation with bipolar disorder?
I'm curious to see if they are indeed common together.

Yep, common with me. But inflammation is an ongoing thing with my family (genes). I'm afraid to get to my dad's age, he complains about the pain all the time. I suspect he has a type of personality disorder (not sociopath). Hence I do see value in the article you've read.

I nearly always have inflammation, mostly in my neck but I am dealing some with Arthur too. I lived in constant physical pain for 25 years. I'm grateful to have found some relief. I need to remember to get more Chinese Cats Claw to help with the inflammations but it also gets weird with my meds so I try not to use it. I do like the flavor though.
I find the mental and physical sides both affect each other very muchly. If I'm happy my pain levels aren't as bad. If I'm upset, my pain levels tend to go up as sometimes does the swelling. High pain levels usually cause me depression. I asked about that in the hospital and they told me that's not uncommon because of the differences in chemicals in our bodies during different emotional states.

I had abnormal ANA for awhile but subsequently normalized. I've had lots of maladies related to inflammation including cancer, chronic pain and a colitis condition.

I'm convinced that bipolor has an inflammatory component in the brain.

I have inflammation also found from last blood work. 3 weeks ago and history of it for 5-6 years.

Seeing Rheumatologist tomorrow I am hoping for some answers and hoping there is a treatment that can help although I don’t have high hopes.

Interesting. I would of never thought this would be true. The types of inflammation that I have come across in my life do not seem to have any connection to mood. Or so I think. But then there are other types of inflammation in the body to consider too.

A while back when I was first researching BP, I found did find interesting that some pdocs are considering BP to be related to seizures with the brain. They think this may be the reason MS work, since their “on label” use is to prevent seizures.

Inflammation issues run rampant in my family and I believe I was born with systemic inflammation. All of my life I ache all over my body and tire very easily. Now, in mid-life I not only feel sore all over, but I have chronic pain that is disabling. I've always had to pee frequently, as if my body is in overload, or is hyper-sensitive. When I was younger I had terrible IBS. When I was young I was so thin and could not gain weight; now I cannot lose weight. My ANA has been high for 30 years. I'm sure my mental illness is connected to my inflammation. Doctors have been completely useless for me with regard to the way I physically feel.

The one and only thing I have ever found that does give me some relief for a while (besides lots of sleep and rest) is a drink that is made with honey (good, organic honey, not the fake-sugary kind), organic apple cider vinegar (Bragg's is excellent), and water. It is an old-fashioned tonic that I have used for many years. It helps me feel less "inflamed"...maybe because the drink soothes my digestive system.

The other thing that helps me feel less inflamed is Advil.

Thank you for introducing this important subject, Leia78.

Yes inflammation can cause a mood disorder. Look into doing a Whole30 .

The current theories are that it's not inflammation per se but its impact on neurogenesis which is impacting on both mood and learning/cognition:

The articles are thought-provoking, but when all is said and done, medical science really doesn't know much, especially about the brain. The theories and conclusions are so changeable.

I haven't researched this cat all but find it interesting. I know some of the meds affect diet cravings, which can have an effect.

I take turmeric 500mg twice daily for anti inflammatory purposes. They have been treating dementia patients with memory issues and having success. This runs in my family, I need all of the help I can get in regards to my memory.
I will take this for life.

I think taking turmeric is a really good idea. I drink "Golden Milk" now and then, but need to make a habit of it.

I find the discussion interesting. I have noticed I have a tendency to fall into depression when I am not exercising and getting sunshine: One article states:
As discussed, neurogenesis is regulated by a variety of factors. Exercise has been consistently shown to enhance hippocampal neurogenesis by increasing neuronal differentiation and new cell survival. Though the data are limited, there is reason to speculate that immune cells may participate in the enhancement of neurogenesis following exercise and environmental enrichment.
I assume the acne I had as a teenager and gum disease during pregnancy/on and off after 1st pregnancy is indicative of having inflammation in my body.
During various reading, I have come across articles that state eating a lot of sugar causes inflammation.
When I am depressed and/or tired--everything hurts! Especially my attempt wound, joints and back. Maybe inflammation increases when we don't get enough sleep?

I have eczema along with BP2. Whenever I mood shift, I have a flare-up of my eczema like clock work. Gets so frustrating when I super depressed and start having red patches all over my body, including my face.
