Has Latuda helped anyone who was manic? I thought it was for depression.
I think I’m becoming manic. I didn’t sleep last night at all but I don’t feel tired and my mind is racing. I’m going to be honest. I’m not med compliant. I don’t take Latuda very much at all. That leaves me mainly taking an SSRI. I called my pdoc, but all he said was if I’d take the medication as prescribed it would really help me. I just don’t see how a med primarily for depression is going to stop mania.

I took Latuda briefly for mania but it didn't help. In fact my progress reversed. But I think in theory it is supposed to help both sides of the spectrum. Just didn't for me.

So far, I've had 2 cases of mania while taking Latuda. One last June and one in January that lasted almost a month. It was mixed mania because I had an SSRI introduced. We took away the SSRI but left Latuda in place. Latuda should have kept me from getting manic.
I see my dr today and I'm asking him to put me back on Seroquel XR but at a lower dose than what made me a zombie. Seroquel is indicated for both bipolar depression and mania. I never had mania on Seroquel. Latuda has been very good for depression but I don't find it very helpful in preventing mania.

I'm taking Latuda and it seems to help with both for me. Everybody is different, though.

I find that it minimizes my hypo states. They are shorter, less intense, and less destructive. But, like it's been said, everyone is different.

Latuda is not mainly for depression; it's an atypical antipsychotic which means it works as a mood stabilizer. It was first FDA approved to treat schizophrenia. Drugs approved for schizophrenia are routinely used to treat bipolar mania. Pharmaceutical companies get in trouble if they specifically market it that way, but they really don't need to. It's very expensive to get a drug approved for other uses; many ap's don't bother with mania specifically but get legitimately into the bipolar market by getting approved for bipolar depression. As I recall Abilify and Seroquel both sneaked their way in that way. I didn't think they did much for depression and I don't count on my Latuda for depression.
I've been on Latuda 4 or 5 years now and I've never become manic. How well it would work in the midst of a mania episode I don't know.I'd like to think it would bring me down. The times I've been floridly manic once Abilify brought me down and the other time I used Seroquel. It seems pretty well decided on that Zyprexa is the most effective aap after clozapine but has rotten side effects. Some bipolar people won't take an SSRI at all because they're afraid it will tip them into mania. Without a mood stabilizer of some kind it's even trickier. |
