I have been on abilify for a year and I feel it's pooping out on me. How often have you had an anti psychotic poop out on you? How long did it take?

I see you're on 20mg according to your signature. Abilify goes up to 30mg, so you still have room to increase the dose if you need to.

I maxed out the dose on Abilify and didn't benefit from it. I had been taking the med for like 6 months?
Thanks for this!

Rexulti is related to Abilify but has fewer side effects. It might be worth a try but it is expensive without insurance. It has been helpful to me.

Love Rexulti. Much better than Abilify IMO. Is expensive even with insurance. We get a lot of free samples from the doc to help.

Do you have a rexulti card? That can help with copays if you don't have a card already. Apparently the price can be reduced to as low as $15 a month, and your first refill is free.

I'm still fighting for insurance coverage, but that is what my nee pdoc told me.
Thanks for this!

I cannot recall an AP pooping out on me, but a couple come to mind that just never did much of anything. Those were Seroquel and Abilify. With Abilify, I didn't notice anything at all. It was odd. I took it for 2 months, then gave up on it.

Seroquel- I also didn't notice any benefit from it at the higher doses. I do take 50 mg. before bedtime to help me sleep. It used to really knock me out, but after just a couple of months the for-sleep Seroquel was only moderately helpful. I can't fall asleep without it, yet it isn't amazingly helpful in terms of allowing me to stay asleep for more than a few hours. Seemed I developed a tolerance to it rather quickly, but I'm not sure that's exactly poop-out.

What are your symptoms, as far as in indications that the Abilify isn't working as well?

I have been having mixed episodes which I have not had in the past year that I have been on abilify.

I was on Abilify for years and it did work well for me. I stopped taking it was normal for 3 years, than broke down, and abilify quit working for me. I was on that and the shot and was still hearing voices. So my mom was losing hope but than Latuda was prescribed and has been working well for me.

Ah, yeah. That could definitely be med poop-out. I've experienced it with AD's when I was younger. Very frustrating, but you know the drill...talk to your pdoc and decide what the next step is. Since you've already tried the max dose of Abilify it might be that you do need a different med at this point.

I wish you well with this. Keep us posted.

I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve never experienced med poop out. But then I have switched Meds from time to time. If you are having mixed episodes it does sound like you need a med tweak.

I've had antidepressants poop out, but not antipsychotics. I've been on Zyprexa and Geodon for years now and they still work just fine. But I would imagine all meds have a risk of becoming ineffective over time.

Seroquel gradually pooped out on me, moving from 300 mg of the XR to 1500 mg of XR and no obvious benefit. That's how I got put on clozaril and there have been no changes except dose increases when hypo (haven't even gotten manic) in the last 2.5 years.
