Its' been a while since I have been on here, but I hope someone may have experienced a sudden weight gain, unexplainable, but could be from the Bipolar meds I am taking.

It's really weird, but I was on the Divalproex ER and tried the Gabapentin, but that mix didn't work, so the pdoc put me on the Seroquel and changed the Divalproex ER to the DR type. Then, with continued mixed/ depression and anxiety, she put me on the Wellbutrin SR. That was about a month or two ago. My weight has now unexplainably skyrocketed 20 lbs, except for these meds, but didn't really start creeping up until the Divalproex change and starting the Seroquel. Weight gain on the Wellbutrin is not a common side effect. I have also experienced some servicer swelling and water retention, one period for about 3 days, but has not returned, about a couple weeks ago.

I haven't changed my intake/ exercise. Has anyone else experienced this and found it to be permanent? I feel horribly big which is really aggravating and depressing. My clothes barely fit, and I am not blessed with $ to buy more and bigger. Please tell me that this is something that will level out and go back?

I've gained weight, but I think it's from overeating rather than meds. I hope it levels out for you.

Seroquel and depakote both have weight gain as a side effect. I wasn’t on seroquel long enough to gain weight but when I was up to 1750mg of depakote plus zyprexa (another weight gainer) I gained 20lb in six weeks. My dr lowered my depakote down to 1000mg and switched me off the zyprexa and I managed to lose about fifteen pounds over the next six months or so. I can’t seem to lose any more weight though. I don’t think I’ll ever be under 200lb again. I’ve made my peace with it for the most part.

I gained 50 pounds on clomipramine and abilify so I got pulled off them. Zoloft caused me to lose 30 immediately.

I gained 22 lbs. on Lamictal of all things. Then the first time I went on Zyprexa in 2012, I ate like food was going out of style and gained 25 lbs. in six weeks. I was already obese so the extra pounds made things that much worse. But when I went back on Zyprexa for good in 2014, I didn't gain anything. Maybe it was because I was also on Geodon, which I think actually made me lose weight. I dropped 100 lbs. a couple of years later when my husband died and I lost my appetite for many months. I did put on a few pounds when my Zyprexa dose was increased this summer, but it's leveled off and my weight is stable.

I’m currently on Seroquel and find that I am losing some weight. Now if we want to talk medications that cause scary weight gain let’s talk about Zyprexa. I went from a somewhat managable weight to literately begging my doctor to put me on something different because I had gained 30 pounds in a month. So I would not put it past any bipolar medication to cause scary weight gain.

I gained weight rapidly on Zyprexa. It was a dealbreaker for me. There are other meds to try that may not cause any weight gain.
