My T made me work on automatic negative thoughts today. We did one and she was so excited. She has been trying to get me to work through the worksheet for 4 years. I have trouble identifying these thoughts because they are just so natural to me.
Anyone else working on changing their thoughts? |

Yes. It is not easy but very much worth the effort.
Regardless of where you are at in your treatment or health, this is a good exercise. Keep up the good work ![]() |

I have used a Dysfunctional Thought Record that challenged such thoughts. I found it to be extremely helpful. I've memorized the worksheet for the most part and can do the exercise without it now.

Yes, I am working on changing my thoughts.
I get very graphic, images of death in my head several times a week. Sometimes about someone else's death, and sometimes my own. Last night, I woke up once to use the bathroom, and I usually sleep well. Then out of the blue as I was about to drift back to sleep....like a flash, I saw myself on a roof of a skyscraper, standing on the ledge, and a person ran up to me to push me off. I saw myself fall, and the blood, and broken body parts etc. I thought about the brain injury, and cracked skull. It lasted for a few scenes playing in my head like a movie. Different versions of the deathly fall. Then I did fall back asleep, and woke up fine in the morning. In the counselling I have had here and there in the past, I never really opened up about this aspect of my mental anguish. I just had an appointment with her earlier this week, and I'll attribute my opening up about this, to this site. I wrote about it a little in one post, and someone replied, which prompted me to do something about it. The therapist did EMDR with me. She is certified trauma trained. |

Thank you for bringing this up. I need to give this some serious thought. I’m not currently in therapy but could do it on my own. Good thread.

Wow. Thank you for starting this thread! I didn't know anyone else experienced such a thing. YES - I battle with awful, disturbing, painful thoughts constantly. I will definitely speak with my therapist about this. I am thinking that it might be a symptom of PTSD?

Good, clear list. The one that always confuses me is "catastrophizing". How can someone who has repeatedly experienced catastrophe avoid thinkg that the worst will happen as usual, again? Is that type of thinking indicative of PTSD? |

I too struggle with jumping to negative thoughts all the time. It’s exhausting. Good luck with the work sheetts!
I think I should address this at my next podcast appt(looking for a new T). |

Ive heard this called "Horror movie hallucinations". Ive had them. They just play automatically and are quite graphic.
