I'm taking clozaril and have gained a lot of weight also including what I gained on Risperdal before I switched. I'm too fat for most of my clothes and I even need new snowshoes, skis, snow pants and other equipment for this winter.
How do I go back to how thin I was a year or two ago? (Or get my doctor to pay for new equipment ?)

When I have to shed pounds I only eat fruit, veggies and lean protein. I lose weight fast when I stick to that diet. Clozapine made me gain 80 pounds. I went on this diet and I went down from 200 pounds to 120 pounds in 7 months.

I know how you feel. When I first started taking psych meds I went from 125 and ballooned to 180 within a year. 8 years later, I still haven't been able to lose the weight

I gained 10 pounds since I started taking rexulti about a year ago. I would typically gain a 5 or so pounds in the winter and lose it in the summer but just gained non-stop this year. I stepped on the scale a few weeks ago and had a big surprise. Am focussed on not gaining anymore and slowly losing it. So far I have stopped the weight gain.

Speaking of..... Every 4 months or so there's nothing to eat but kraft mac n cheese. Blech! I need to lose a lot of weight too and that certainly isnt helping! Fruit and veggies and chicken breasts? My go to protein used to be salmon but now I'm allergic to seafood. Hrumph!

metformin can help, sometimes, with weight gain from clozapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, etc. i read an abstract for 2 smaller studies...they seem to indicate that high dose, high potency antioxidants -might- help facilitate weight loss while on neuroleptics, also.
if you're treatment resistant, then clozapine is probably the best thing out there. if not...maybe a different tranquilizer? the only problem there is that clozapine can be rough to taper....not to scare you, but there's a recognized "discontinuation syndrome" associated with stopping clozapine treatment. ugh. if you and the prescriber do decide to try something else, just please advocate for yourself and try to haggle for a -slow- taper and switch. |

I am diabetic so I eat low carb and that seems to help drop a few pounds. It doesn't come off real fast but it does come off. I to have put on weight with meds but if I watch my carb count that really helps.
